Iceland : Car rental and itinerary
Hello!
I'm planning to visit Iceland in June. I'm travelling solo. I want to rent a car. It's quite expensive, so I can only afford a small 2wd (and it has to be automatic). I want to go away from the ring road, for example the West Fjords. How is the road up there, for example going from Bildudalur to Holmavik? And Akureyki to Husey via Kopasker ?
Here's what I've planned doing:
Lundi 8 juin Reykjavik, arrive AM
Mardi 9 juin Reykjavik - Grundarfjordur (253 km)
Mercredi 10 juin Grundarfjordur - Bildudalur (299 km)
Jeudi 11 juin Bildudalur - Korpudalur (104 km)
Vendredi 12 juin Korpudalur - Holmavik (? km)
Samedi 13 juin Holmavik - Saeberg (? km)
Dimanche 14 juin Saeberg - Akureyri (230 km)
Lundi 15 juin Akureyri - Kopasker (188 km)
Mardi 16 juin Kopasker - Husey (? km)
Mercredi 17 juin Husey - Stodvarfjordur (? km)
Jeudi 18 juin Stodvarfjordur - Hofn (160 km aprox)
Vendredi 19 juin Hofn - Hvoll (160 km)
Samedi 20 juin Hvoll - Skogar (137 km)
Dimanche 21 juin Skogar
Lundi 22 juin Skogar - Laugarvatn (188 km)
Mardi 23 juin Laugarvatn - Reykjavik (77 km)
Mercredi 24 juin Reyjjavik – MTL flight back
What do you think of such an itinerary? I'll be driving alone. And want to be able to enjoy the sights too.
Do you know of websites that have more detailed road maps? I read that I can't go on F roads with a 2wd, but the maps I see don't have road numbers!
Thanks a lot for any extra tips! I'm exicited about this trip!!

You have planned 16 one-night stops overs. That is crazy IMO. You will be packing/checking out/checking in/unpacking every single day. This plan give you absolutely no leeway for weather/unexpected discoveries/laundry or anything else.

Are you intending to drive from Kopasker to Husey around the coast? If so you might find that quite boring and, unless the road has been improved at last, very slow going. Going via Dettifoss, Mödrudalur and Highway 901 (old Ring Road) could be much more interesting.
You also seem to be spending a lot of time in the west at the start and end of the trip so may be rushing the rest.

Pretty much any road that isn't an F road is OK for 2WD, although depending on the state of the surface some unsealed roads can be quite slow.
Think carefully about the road round the coast, by all accounts it is not that good scenically and you would miss some good bits inland.
