Iceland 4 3 days in august. ideas?
Hi,
I am travelling to Iceland in mid august as a stop over for about 3 days. Other than the Blue Lagoon, which I hear is a must-see, does anyone have any suggestions of where to go or what hotel to stay at in Rajkjavik ( sorry for the spelling mistake). Also, what is the weather like in august? Is it true that it can rain a lot? thanks for returning my posted note if you do.

Blue Lagoon is great, but will only take a half-day at most from Reykjavik. If you can, try to get to the Lake Myvatn area in northeast iceland. The scenery is spectacular and varied. Parts of it look like the Moon and there are also great waterfalls and natural lava formations as well. I was there in July for a week and it rained for three days out of the seven. The other days were sunny (about 20 hours a day!) and in the 60s.

I was the Personnel Officer at Keflavik NATO Base 1972-1975. Things have probable changed a lot but I second waht has been said above.
Lake Myvatn (Bug Lake) has lots of midges but also a great underground cave that you swim in. There is a male and female entrance, no bathing suit needed, a gret and unusual experience.
Thingvellir is where the ancient Icelandic Chiefs used to hold meetings, they would turn there backs to the people and yell into the rocks, sound bounced back to the people. Gullfoss is one of the most beautiful waterfalls I have seen.
DO NOT MISS THE WHALING STATION. Its on Whale bay. We saw 5 whales in various stages of being cut up. A unipue experience.
The weather is very changeable so be prepared for everything. August is one of the best times to see Iceland.
Enjoy

Definitely rent a car - allows you to get out and see Iceland and all of its beauty. You must see Gullfoss. If you are there on a Friday and Saturday night prepare yourself for a wild time in the city - we had a blast and the Icelanders were extremely friendly. As for the Blue Lagoon - we left Reykjavik early on the day of our departure and spent a couple hours there and then got on the plane home (there are showers to clean up). Great way to relax before leaving.

I lived in Iceland for a few years, and although I cannot reccomend any hotels these are a few suggestions for your itinerary: Thingvellir/Gulfoss (1-day), Blue Lagoon/walking in Reykjavik (1-day), Pony trekking in the hills (half-day), spelunking (half-day).
Iceland is gorgeous in August, you will have a great time. It is still cool (60-70), but the sun shines for pretty much 24 hours. Not typically too much rain, but you should expect some showers and wind.
