Depends somewhat on when you go and your definition of 'getting around'.
During the tourist season (June/July/August), there are a lot of bus tours that can take you to see the major sites (Golden Triangle, etc.). These become fewer and further between during the shoulder and off-seasons.
There are public transportation buses that cover most of the country. The only issue that you may find is that the stops are not that close to some of the 'tourist attractions'. The schedules can be found at: http://www.nat.is/travelguideeng/bus_stop_the_real_icelandic.htm
