I am planning a honeymoon in late may early june. It includes flying into Rome from NYC and staying there for a few nights. Then We want to take the train to the Amalfi coast. (We are thinking Sorrento, Positano, and Capri). Any suggestions on hotels and things to do. Also, Can we fly back to NYC from the Amalfi Coast or do we need to back to Rome?

Nicki,<BR><BR>Your itinerary sounds good - I recently returned from a similar trip with my wife and we had a great time. <BR><BR>It is difficult to recommend hotels without knowing what kind of budget you are working with. However, many threads on this site provide great information on hotels in all price ranges - just do a search on Rome and any other city you are interested in to get details. <BR><BR>We stayed at the Excelsior in Rome and thought the location, service, and room quality/size were great. It is probably a little pricey, but I used frequent traveler points so the stay was free.<BR><BR>In Positano we stayed at a B&B we found in the Karen Brown Guide (a good source for reasonably priced, quaint, high quality Inns/B&Bs). It was called the Villa Rosa, and our room with a private terrace and continental breakfast was about $100/night.<BR><BR>We were also going to tour Capri and Sorrento, but we had such fun in Positano that we spent most of our three days and nights in and around the city. Travel to surrounding cities is pretty easy via bus, so don't feel as though you have to map out a full itnerary before you get to the Coast. Just pick one town to stay in as a base, and explore some of the other areas on day trips (Sorrento and Positano are both suitable "base" cities).<BR><BR>Be advised that there is no direct train to the Coast. You can get as far as Naples on a standard train, then need to switch to a local train for the ride to Sorrento. From Sorrento you can take a scenic bus ride to Positano or hire a car. We took the bus ride and thought it was pretty thrilling, as you ride along some pretty intense cliffs.<BR><BR>In terms of flights, you cannot fly directly from Amalfi back to NYC. You can either make your way back to Rome, or catch a flight from Naples that connects through one of the other cities in route to NYC (either Milan or Rome I suspect).<BR><BR>Hope some of this is helpful.<BR><BR>Cheers,<BR><BR>Steve

Hi,<BR><BR>We stayed at the Tramonto D'Oro in Praiano, which is between Positano and Amalfi. The hotel is on the cliffs over looking the sea with a roof top pool. We loved it. The owners are wonderful. Also Ravello is the most romatic and special place. Look into staying there. You can fly from Naples to Rome or Milan with a connection to NYC. My husband flew from Boston to Brussels and from there direct to Naples. You will have a fabulous time.<BR><BR>ENJOY

We just returned from a trip to Amalfi Coast and Rome. We stayed at Le Sirenuse in Positano and Hotel Raphael in Rome and strongly recommend them both.<BR>If you plan to see much of the Amalfi coast I would encourage you to rent a car. The freedom to zip between towns without worrying about bus schedules is great. We used our car every day we were there. Our hotel provided parking for ITL 35000/day.<BR>As far as flights, you may be able to get a flight out of Naples to NYC, but I don't know of any airports closer than that to the coast.<BR>Feel free to email me if you'd like more specifics about our trip.<BR>j.

Nicki - Italy is a great place for a honeymoon! My husband and I were married in Sept of this year, and went to Italy for 2 weeks. We went to the Amalfi Coast and Rome (as well as other places). We flew direct from NYC to Milan and then flew from Milan to Naples. The travel agent had a private driver pick us up. We spent 4 nights in Sorrento, which was a great place to start out. Not only is it beautiful but the pace is much more relaxing than the larger cities. We recommend starting out "slow" as you will be exhausted from the wedding. We took the bus down the coast and spent the day in Positano and Amalfi. We also spent one night on Capri. In Sorrento, we stayed at the Excelsior Vittoria (wonderful!) and in Capri we stayed at La Residenza. We enjoyed both hotels. We took the hydrofoil back to Naples from Capri and took the train from Naples to Rome. <BR> By the end of our 5 days, we were ready to move on to a faster pace. Rome was one of our favorite places. The highlight of our trip was meeting the Pope in what is called the sposi novelli. Sposi novelli is a special audience with the Pope for newlyweds. I think it is held on 2 Wednesdays a month. You are escorted up to him - get to kiss his ring, we had him bless our rings and a photographer will take your picture that you can purchase later. There are about a million things to do in Rome so I would do a search on these boards adn the Eyewitness guides are great too! We learned a lot of good things from the fodors boards. How come nobody mentions visiting Vietri? This is a great little town that is known for it's pottery. If you do a little research, you will see that this stuff is world reknowned and is pretty cheap. Just a little plug for a great town. Congrat on your upcoming event.

We have driven quite a bit in Europe, but I would never drive in <BR>Rome, Naples, or the Amalfi Coast. If you don't want to do the bus, hire a driver for about $35/hr. Some of the hotels in Positano will pick you up in Naples for $$. This is the most romantic place I have ever visited. I am heading back there in May.

Congrats on your wedding and for chosing Italy for your honeymoon. <BR><BR>Seeing that you plan to take the train to Naples indicates you probably won't rent a car? That's fine because once you get to Naples you can continue on the train, but also taking the ferry over to Sorrento is quite nice with the views of the bay, etc. We found Sorrento to be great as it provides a central base for exploring the coast and the trip to Capri.<BR><BR>Hotel recommendations: <BR>Rome - HOTEL SAN CARLO *** <BR>01139-066784548 email:[email protected]<BR>We didn't stay in Sorrento, we stayed in Positano, which we didn't end up liking that much.<BR>

Again, it depends upon budget:we,too, stayed at the Villa Rosa, which is charming and quite reasonable; on the other hand, Le Sirenuse is just across the street and is quite expensive and has an excellent reputation. The Villa Rosa is higher up, so with a better view, tho! We were there late May this year, and eating breakfast(included) on our private patio with a view of the mountains and sea was a true delight.
