I will be in these places for 1 or 2 nights each in October and need some advice. My wife and I are intersted in staying somewhere clean, affordable, and located within walking distance of major attractions. If you have some advice, please share it. Thanks!

I don't know what "affordable" means to you -- but if it goes up to about $100 to $120 per night, the President Hotel in Istambul satisfies your other two criteria -- especially location. It is part of the Best Western chain and in the heart of the old city -- three blocks from the covered bazzar.
