I have been lucky enough to have gone to Italy every year for the past 4 years:
2002: Venice, 3 nights
2003: Sicily for 10 nights in March-April and Rome & Calabria for 10 nights in Sept.
2004: Sardinia, Maratea, Calabria
2005: One week in Calabria following 2 weeks in Turkey

This year I went to Greece for the 3rd time and it was amazing, but I still long for Italy. What am I doing about it? Continuing to study Italian and planning a week in Puglia for June 2007 before visiting my family in Calabria for a week.

I think many people suffer from this sickness here?

Yes I suffer from it too. This was the year for my China trip but somehow I am going to Italy next month for the fifth time and China is but a distant memory.
If this is a sickness I hope I never get well

BTW, I don't remember which Fodorite it was that used the term "Romesick" versus homesick of course. I thought it was quite descriptive and clever.

I havent been since 2003. I go in about one month. I cant wait to get my "fix" I am an Italian junkie !!

I am even worse! I was there in May this year - and aching already to return! The worst is that I will only be able to visit again in 2008! Have to divide my little time and money between Italy and France - so it is one year to the one, next year to the other one!

Our family visited Italy in late May/early June of this year. It was the first time for all of us but my husband. We spent 6 nights in Rome, 3 in Florence and 3 in Venice. While I still think it was a good division of our time, I am just dying to return to Florence. There are so many places in Florence we didn't get to visit. Plus, visiting Florence sparked an interest in Dante in my son (15). He is half-way through the Divine Comedy, so I know that if we returned, he would really eat up the Dante sites. If it were possible to get a direct flight from Dallas to Florence, I'd have us back at Thanksgiving!

I LOVE the term "Romesick!" I thought I was crazy - there are so many fabulous places yet to see, but my mind automatically goes to "when can I next go back?" I'll be there in 51 more days - can't wait!!

My dream is to live it not visit it. As soon as my husband retires (3-4 more years), we plan on renting a place for a couple of months and invite all our family to visit. We want everyone to love Italy as much as we do.
In the meantime, I'm starting my research on Sicily and the Amalfi Coast for May 2007. It'll be our 4th. trip.

LOL LoveItaly! So that's the answer to my "problem"....Romesickness! I love Italy and I truly love Rome. I have quite a crush on this wonderful city and long for it always. Glad to know I'm in good company with fellow Italy lovers.

I have to go to Italy every year (late May), even if it means I go broke for the remainder of the year (and I do). I've been going since 2002, and cant imagine the emptyness I'd feel if I skipped a year. I even went solo this time b/c the thought of not going was
giving me heartache.

I actually get mocked (in a friendly way) by others...they would say "Rome, again? Why dont you try something different?" but any other place, although enjoyable, just isnt the same.

Ah, my fellow travellers! I go to Italy once a year and haven't been there yet in '06, though I may go at Christmastimet to see family. I've been plenty of other places in the U.S. this year, but it just isn't the same. And no matter what part of Italy I'm visiting, I always need a few days in Rome. It is like going home.

I have the same problem and so does a friend of mine. He calls it PIS (post Italy syndrome). He goes once or twice a year, though! I dream about Italy all of the time. I will hopefully get to go in '08, possibly Puglia.

AP6380, if you are studying Italian in classes (rather than solo) at least you know you are not alone. I am studying Italian in DC and everyone in the class is always planning their next trips.

My wife and I have a bad case of it - we're heading back to France in 27 days, 11 hours, and about 27 minutes (not that we're counting down or anything) for our 3rd trip to that country, and have started booking our big family trip to Italy in 2007...

Count me in. I went to Italy for the first time in late March for 16 days and I miss it desperately. I only visited Florence and Venice and I can’t wait to see Rome and other areas. For 2007, I was planning to visit Rome and Madrid but now I am thinking of spending the entire time in Italy. When I returned home, I really felt that I enjoyed Florence slightly more than Venice, but it is Venice that my mind returns to over and over.

One more Romesick person. Oct. will be my 7th trip to Italy and Rome in particular. I think maybe I lived there in another life - I am always planning my next trip back. My dream --to own a little apt. in Trastevere and visit there at least three months every year.

I don't know for sure if this site helps or hurts (I am consumed with travel-envy) but I'm addicted!

Interestingly enough, I took group classes for 2 years and it pretty much seemed that there wasn't anyone else as consumed with traveling there as I. I now study with a tutor, who is Roman, and just talking about Rome with him makes me want to go back!

I can't believe it - my kids are going to get back to Florence before I will! Last night, they announced the destination for the 2008 high school choir trip: Florence/Rome/Amalfi Coast/Sicily!
