I am amazed at the posts here that talk about troubles communicating whilst in Europe. I never have problems. Of course, I am fluent in German, French, Spanish, and Italian, and also conversant in Flemish. I can talk to the natives with no trouble at all, so why can't you people?

Alberto - then avoid Britian which seems to be favoured by American tourists who only feel comfortable where english is spoken - sad, but on the bright side means less Americans to encounter while in continental Euope.

I totally agree with Mika. Actually in Europe,since we don't want people to think we are too proud of our linguistic prowess, we make sure to never speak english or another foreign language when a foreigner is present.
