Hungary outside of Budapest

Going to Czech Republic and Hungary next month and so far our itinerary includes Prague, Cesky Krumlov and Budapest. What other cities/towns/villages would you recommend in Hungary outside of Budapest? We enjoy visiting smaller places because we feel there is a better opportunity to experience the "true" culture and more opportunity to interact with locals. We are interested in local customs, architecture, music, food and drink, history, or anything that we can't experience here at home (USA). Likely, we will only have time to visit one other area in Hungary on an overnight (maybe 2 nights). Should we visit Eger/Holloko? Pecs/Villany? Danube Bend? Something else? Any advice appreciated.

p.s. We haven't determined our in-country method of travel yet, so if you would like to include info on that as well, please do. Also, we aren't afraid of driving if that would enable us to do more.

Thise might give you some ideas; the pictures are geotagged, but then you have to look at them individually rather than as a slide show:

There is a trip report also, a little old, but the sights have probably remained the same; click on my name to find it.

Though outside of Hungary, a natural complement to your itinerary would be two nights in Vienna to complete the Habsburg Empire capitals triple-ticket.

An interesting driving route within Hungary could be Budapest-Székesfehérvár-Pannonhalma-Györ (overnight), then return via Esztergom and Szentendre to Budapest.

By train, Szeged for a night might be enjoyable given your interest in architecture, as well.

There is a line east to west that shows you where all the spas are. You have to get out and visit local spas. I've been to holes in a field to caves to enjoy spas and they are all worth while. The cave one, which is magical, is in Miskolc on the road south. Eger is a good visit and Tokaij is also fun for the wine.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I will look at the places mentioned to see what might work for us. I will probably have more questions once we decide...
