Hungary outside of Budapest

Jump to last reply

Going to Czech Republic and Hungary next month and so far our itinerary includes Prague, Cesky Krumlov and Budapest. What other cities/towns/villages would you recommend in Hungary outside of Budapest? We enjoy visiting smaller places because we feel there is a better opportunity to experience the "true" culture and more opportunity to interact with locals. We are interested in local customs, architecture, music, food and drink, history, or anything that we can't experience here at home (USA). Likely, we will only have time to visit one other area in Hungary on an overnight (maybe 2 nights). Should we visit Eger/Holloko? Pecs/Villany? Danube Bend? Something else? Any advice appreciated.

p.s. We haven't determined our in-country method of travel yet, so if you would like to include info on that as well, please do. Also, we aren't afraid of driving if that would enable us to do more.
