Huh? Low season in Prague is mid-July-mid-Aug?

I'm finding it hard to believe some Prague hotel rates I've been seeing online, showing mid-July-mid-Aug in the Low Season column. Am I misreading this, or does something dire happen in Prague in mid-summer that would account for it?

When I was in Prague last month, two different people who work in the tourist industry mentioned that their busiest months are May and September, and July and August are not even second.

"Low season" is correct. Prague is a city like any other: People seek to avoid the heat and therefore go to the seaside or the mountains.

Well, maybe not the Czech seaside, as there isn't one, nor the Czech mountains. Anyway, it IS low season

Thanks, good to know. But . . .I didn't think it got that-all warm there. What's the weather like in July-Aug?

Average temperature is a high of 72/73 in those two months, a low of 50-odd. In other words, cooler than Ontario, Canada, where I live.

Prague isn't Arctic, it gets hotter there in summer than many other European countries due to its particular climate. I think an avg. of only 72 in July-Aug sounds little low to me. In any case, if the hotel says that, I'd take it for their word. I haven't ever seen that in all the Prague hotel listings I've seen, though -- July and Aug were always the same high season fares. Low season was in the winter only.

Prague is a very popular tourist destination nowadays and can get very crowded in the summer.

In August there is almost a country swap here. Czechs go to Italy and Italians come here. If you sit on the Old Town Square anytime in August (and close your eyes), you'll think you were in central Rome. Beware of placing too much emphasis on "seasons". One hotels' high season is another ones' normal season etc. The only thing "Dire" I ever experienced in August in Prague was a warm orange juice. Not exactly hell is it!

always good to see you posting here, and by the way, your little 'intro' kit for Prague came in very handy
(though I didn't need the 'where is the nearest hospital?' flash card, thank goodness. )

I agree with Christina, that average high temp seemed a little on the low side to me, based on no personal or empirical evidence whatsoever. I've just heard that Prague can be plenty hot in the summer, because it is in a valley, and that there can also be air quality problems because of that.

A Prague-ian?

While I agree with elaine, that it's always good to see a post from you, jason - - I have to laugh at how quickly we forget!

August 14, 2002 - - Prague experiences its worst flood of at least a century!

Hopefully, not relevant to 2005, nor anytime again soon!

Best wishes,

Rex

Averages are, well, averages. It's 90 one year and 60 the next, and you have a pleasant average temp of 75.
