How to Travel Europe

My friend and I are in college and are planning a trip to Europe. We are thinking of flying into madrid and flying home out of london. We want to see Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, Verona, Florence, and Rome and then fly from Rome to London and then london to home. We were planning on going May 15 to sometime in June. We want to travel as cheap as possible, we were thinking about a EURAIL pass or maybe cheap airlines between major cities. We also plan to stay in hostels. So it would be helpful to know how many days to spend in each place and how to travel the most effective way possible.
