Hi all,

Looking for some advice about the 9 full nights I have planned for a south of France trip I have planned from 8 Sep to 18 Sep. Will be arriving into Lyon (4pm) and headed to Paris on the 18th. I am interested in spending time in Lyon, Avignon, Marseille, Nice and Monaco. My wife and I are interested in a relaxed pace in each, nothing too rushed. From our research, we are thinking 2 nights in each and potentially 3 in Nice, however am unsure if I am trying to undertake too much?

My wife and I would like to visit wineries, tour the local sights in each place, eat delicious food and take it easy. Would the days above be too hectic. I have some tours arrange 1 night in each. While I accept I can't see everything, but would this give us a good feel for the place?

Few wineries are located in large towns (Marseille) or casinos (Monaco).

How are you getting from one town to another...car? train?

Five cities in 9 nights does not seem to be a "take it easy" trip to me. I would just do 3 max - Lyon, Avignon, and Nice. I would rent a car in Avignon or hire a driver to enjoy the beautiful countryside, small villages, wineries, and "slow pace". Maybe 2 nights in Lyon, 4 nights in Avignon to visit the city & countryside, then 3 nights in Nice with a bus trip to Monte Carlo (not one of my favorites).

That adds up to 11 nights - not 9 or 10. And 2 nights in each is only about 1 1/2 days in each - not enough time (except maybe for Lyon & Marseille).

I think you are trying to do too much for such a short period plus, the biggest problem I see with your plan is that you are staying in large cities in addition to Paris afterwards.

One of the things I love about Provence are the small villages. I would suggest making a couple of these your base to allow you to explore the other villages. Some of my favorites are Roussillon, Gordes or St. Remy. Be sure and check out the market on Thursday or Sunday mornings at Isle sur la Sorgue.

One of the most fun days my husband and I had last year was renting a canoe the paddling on the Pont du Gare. As we rounded the bend and saw the Pont du Gare, there was a great, shady beach area where we stopped and had a lovely picnic and bottle of wine. Now, that's relaxing!
