Hello, I thank you in advance for any helpful responses. We will be going from Como to Lauterbrunnen and would like to use a 8 day Swiss pass for the trip. We plan on 5 days in BO and then two days in Zurich. So how does that work buying the ticket in Italy?

I'm not sure about coming from Como itself, but last year, I bought my ticket from Varenna to Tirano. In Tirano I had my Swiss Pass validated while I waited on the Bernina Express.
Pick a route that goes through Chiasso. Buy a ticket from Como S. Giovanni to Chiasso (one stop from Como) and use your Swiss Pass for the rest of the trip. For a zoomable map showing where your Swiss Pass is valid, go here: http://tinyurl.com/3sxt2fk.

hop a cheap regional train Com to Lugano for a couple of euro
the old cisalpino.it now taken over by trenitalia.it
Your swiss pass will be good all over from there
on basic trains though surcharges on special or fast trains.

Chiasso would be closer but all your best connections
will be from Lugano so personally might head there to
save time not much farther if you will have a look at a map.

The first leg on one good route requires a change at Arth-Goldau. Trains on that leg stop first at Chiasso and then at Lugano. There's no need to change trains at Lugano.
