How to get to Mallorca

I am in the early stages of planning a trip next June for my son, daughter-in-law,granddaughter and myself. We will spend a few days in London then want to go to Mallorca. We also plan to spend time in Cassis, the Nice area and the Gorge du Verdon. The departure city doesn't matter so much as long as it's near one of the places we will be visiting. I'm planning on spending a day or two in Paris probably enroute to/from the south of France. I am having a heck of a time finding flights from either London, Marseille or even Nice. It seems some airlines only fly on certain days which makes early planning a bit difficult.

I am hoping those that frequently visit or have visited Mallorca recently might have a few suggestions as to best way to get to/from there and doing so in a timely fashion. So far I found that British Airways has a flight, but the price at a 220 GBP a ticket seems extremely high. Several flights depart from Barcelona and Madrid but that doesn't work with our present itinerary.

Try www.skyscanner.com It shows five direct flights daily from London to Palma on easyJet and Ryanair. This site is good for the budget airlines where prices are set by each leg rather than on round trips. Your choice of departure cities is not clear so I didn't check others. You may possibly be unfamiliar with the ways of budget flying so I urge you to check the rules carefully and look at the huge number of comments on this board and others.

Thanks. You're right I am not familiar with budget airlines. I know they exist, they are cheap and am certainly willing to try one for an inter- Europe flight. Not sure about the luggage problem. We will be traveling fairly light but will also have a bag with rock climbing equipment, at least the basics. It will have to be checked. Willing to pay extra if necessary.

If you use the link below (from the offical airport website) you will see all routes between the UK and Palma de Mallorca.

Maybe think of flying out of a different airport than those covering just London.

Ideally I would like to fly from one of the London area airports non- stop to Palma, then fly to a city near south of France to continue that part of out trip. In my search so far, I've found a couple of possibilities out of London, but it's difficult to fly to Marseille,Toulon or Nice.Could do the trip in reverse. Taking the train to Avignon,Marseille, or Nice then fly to Palma. Another option I'm considering is flying from Palma to Barcelona, then fly to south of France.

I was just hoping someone had an airline that they flew regularly. There do seem to be lots of flights but many have long stopovers or leave very early or very late. Might try looking at other airports in England but this would just add more time since we will,be staying in London. Not eager to go down to Southampton, Bristol or others just to catch a flight.

I can vouch for GermanWings and Iberia.

I avoid Ryan Air and the like because once you factor in the fees, they are almost on par with the legacy carriers.

Firstly, it is too early now to check schedules for June 2016. These will become available later in the year. Meanwhile, I notice that Easyjet alone has four daily flights from London Gatwick to Palma in June 2015. Prices range from £55 to £98, depending on the time of day. The flights are direct and take 2 hours 20 minutes.

Secondly, don't be afraid of European low-cost airlines. They are mostly catering for Europeans making business trips, going on holiday or on short breaks, or going home for the weekend. Most of these passengers will have only carry-on bags. Low-cost airlines can get expensive if you need to check lots of large bags, but some people do it. Many low-cost flights are between regional centres, because many people don't live in capital cities. However, Mallorca gets lots of visitors in the high season, so the airport in Palma is big.

In June 2015, Ryanair have flights from Palma to Marseille twice a week. There are other airlines on that route, and they are listed in Ribeirascara's helpful link above. There are two flights tomorrow, for example.

A word on language. Mallorca is in Spain, but the local language is Catalan, so you see signs in both languages. The island is called Majorca in Spanish. The Spanish for Marseille is Marsella, so that is the name you should look for on the airport website.

You may also need to look out for other places called Palma if you use a website like EXpedia. They will also offer all sorts of routings which may require a change of plane somewhere and at an exorbitant price. Direct flights are best if they are available, and may influence your choice of departure airport.

I really WISH the OP would stop spinning wheels and actually LOOK at the Skyscanner.com or the whichbudget.com sites rather than complaining about how "difficult" things are or about how they want to fly from London, etc.

If you consider making one change (in Barcelona) to fly from Palma to either Marseilles or Nice (on Vueling) then there really isn't a lot WE CAN DO TO HELP YOU.

I think you are a little out of touch with reality here. Palma isn't exactly some major point like London or Paris. You need to learn with what's available and make the most of it IMO.

chartley To add to your full explanation: The link I gave went back to Spanish, but one can change the language of the website to English, if the OP wanted.

I feel that sometimes one can only help answer questions so far. It is usually down to the OP to make their own mind up as what is best.

Thanks chartly that's the kind of information I wanted. I'm not sure why Dukey seems to have it in for me but I had done some research prior to posting. In fact I hardly ever post here asking for information as I usually manage to do a very decent job on my own. I was aware of Skyscanner and had looked at it as well as several other carriers. I will admit that I have always used BA for flights within Europe but wanted to familiarize myself with some of the others in order to open up my options. BTW, I believe that Palma is one of Europe's busiest airports especially during tourist season.

I am trying to be as flexible as possible but it really doesn't make sense to spend more than one day trying to get somewhere in Europe. I may be overly fussy but I'm not doing a departure that leaves at 6:00 or 20:00 either. I'm almost 70 and my travel requirements are not what they were even 10 years ago.

Thank you to all who have offered relative information. I appreciate it. I will continue to do my research and as chartly also mentioned it is too early for definite schedules. I am, of course, open to any other suggestions regarding flights.

Thanks, ribeirasacra for the link.

There is no "luggage problem" on Easyjet, I have taken it several times. Not sure what luggage problem you refer to, there is a minor fee for checking luggage if you book in advance, but that isn't unusual on many airlines nowadays to try to separate that out (United does iot in the US, for example). It's only about 15 euro. Carryon allowances are normal, except you're only allowed one bag (but it's a regular size). Doesn't make any sense to complain about it when it's just the bottom line of what you spend that matters, not how you parse it out.

Mallorca is one of the most popular holiday destinations from the UK and there are dozens of flights from the London area.

Easyjet, Ryan Air, Thomas Cook Airlines, Thomson Airways and Monarch offer flights from Gatwick, Stansted and Luton

Vueling and easy jet fly from Palma to Marseille and Toulouse

Thanks Christina and sofarsogood. I have no problem paying a bit extra for luggage. We will, as I stated earlier, have one bag of rock climbing equipment. Not sure yet how much weight or what exactly this will entail, but I doubt it'll be much more than an average size bag. I appreciate the mention and recommendation of various airlines since I have no personal experience with any of them.
