Train from Saint-Lazare station in Paris to Vernon - no need to book in advance - a regional train then bus or taxi the three miles or so to Giverny.
I walked there from Vernon along a footpath along a disused railway track along the Seine so if into walking it's a sweet walk.

There are flowers in bloom all season from opening in spring to closing in autumn. The website lists what is in bloom by season:

Actually, I wish the place were open in winter. After all Monet lived and painted there in the winter, as well as the seasons when flowers blossom. Some of the things he did, like, "Skaters at Giverney", are just lovely, and I would like to see the place as he saw it.

Most people only get ferried from the Vernon train station or by tour buses to the gardens and house and rarely bop around Giverny - the quintessential sleepy old French village - you can walk down to the Seine where Monet often did to paint its scenes - including art from the American Impressionist gaggle of artists who gathered here too.
and there is another Impressionist museum in the village:

anyone in Giverny may also enjoy a visit to Auvers-sur-Oise, which I actually liked as much as Giverny:

Auvers is about an hour by suburban trains or RER and train from Paris.
