How to get from Victoria Station to Harrods Dept store?

HI,
I will be taking the Gatwick Express into London. ( I am staying at the Le Meridien at Gatwick for one night before going to Rome) I want to visit Harrods and Westminster Abby. How do I get to these areas? Which is closer to the station?

I have been to London before and have found the tube very easy to use. What connections should I use?
Thank you,
Gayle

The Abbey is a classic example of a journey that probably isn't worth using public transport for.

By the time you've bought your ticket, fought your way to the District/Circle line, taken an Eastbound train two stops to Westminster then threaded your way across the road, you could have pretty much walked straight down Victoria Street from the station (say 800 yds)

However, you would have used Westminster tube station, which - if you look at the Jubilee line platforms and their access - constitutes an extraordinary sight in its own right, especially given its rather Olde Englishe street entrances.

To get to Mr Fayed's emporium, Circle or District westbound to South Ken, then Picadilly east to Knightsbridge.

Or just hop on a bus. Bus maps from Victoria are at www.tfl.gov.uk/buses/spiders/pdf/victoria.pdf
C1 from Victoria to Knightsbridge: loads to the Abbey. Far more fun, and - these days - less frustrating than ever.

Actually - the distance from Victoria to Harrods is almost exactly the same as from Victoria to Westminster Abbey - about 9/10 of a mile. If the weather is nice either could probably be walked nearly as fast as taking the tube. From Victoria walk up Eccleston to Belgrave Place and Belgrave Square, to Sloan St and then Hans St/Rd to Harrods.

You can get to Harrods by tube by either taking the Victoria line to Green Park and then the Picadilly line to Knightsbridge, or flanneruk's version heading west to S. Kens and then switching to the picadilly line. (be sure to exit the tube station following the "Harrods" signs)

If you want to have about five more pounds to spend at Harrod's, buy an open return ticket (Gatwick-Victoria Station-Gatwick) for South Central trains rather than taking the Gatwick Express. The trip takes about 40 minutes compared to 30 on the express.
