How to Dress in the Berner Oberland

Hi,

I'm getting ready to leave for my Switzerland/Italy trip the first two weeks of June. We'll be staying in Lauterbrunnen and touring the Berner Oberland for five days starting on June 7th. I'm not sure how to pack for that portion of my trip. Is it acceptable to go to restaurants still attired in hiking pants and hiking boots? I'm assuming that people who visit this area for the hiking will be dressed pretty casually throughout the day?

Thank you!

If you want to change from your hiking pants then change into a smarter pair or a skirt for the evening and wear smart comfortable shoes I have never really fouhn d you need to dress up that much in the evening.

That's good to hear because I figure we'll be hiking and taking trains from village to village and it would seem to be quite inconvenient to return to Lauterbrunnen just to change in the late afternoon. I just didn't want to look like an ignorant tourist!

Well it depends.

I certainly would not wear soiled hiking clothes or look in disarray if I were dining in a nice restaurant like the dining room of the Hotel Schonegg in Wengen.

If you dined in a cafe like the Asian restaurant on the main street in Murren, that would be a different manner.

I also wouldn't wear hiking attire if I were dining at the Hotel Victoria in Interlaken, but going into the Hooters next door you would be as acceptable as you please.

Tschuss,
Thin
