How safe is Venice ...

We are going to Venice in October and my friend has questioned how safe is Venice after dark to walk around? We are looking at different areas for the hotel and were hoping to get information on "safety". I have not seen any new postings on this issue and would greatly appreciate any information you all can provide.

Thx

Lee

Venice is one of the safest places anywhere. Particularly if you are walking together, I wouldn't worry at all. The worst thing people have posted about are shortchange attempts.

My reply may or may not help, since my daughters and I were there at Christmas time when the city was quite active at all times. (It may be like that all year!) We never felt apprehensive, since we felt safety in numbers. We stayed at the Ambassador Tre Rose, a sweet little hotel..very reasonable...just a block from St. Mark's. Ahhhh, your post is taking me back to that incerdible city.......Have a great time.

There are few foreign places I've felt safer than I did in Venice. Perhaps because the streets are reasonably quiet without traffic but you still see people walking about.

One night in Venice included running into a lone violinist playing in one of the smaller squares. Lovely.

We just got back from a visit to Venice. We walked around St. Marks Square and through many of the small streets and had no apprehension! There were always a suprising number of others doing the same thing and we had a great time. Our hotel was the Gabrielle Sandwirth on the Grand Canal. Go and enjoy!

I've never felt unsafe in Venice.
A waitress tried to short change my husband but he spotted the attempt.
It's a good idea to say out loud what you have tendered, e.g. "cinquanta". If possible try to pay the exaxt amount or to tender as small a note as possible.
Short changing can happen anywhere.

Of course Venice is safe. It's tough for a criminal to make a fast getaway in a town without roads.

Go to Venice there's no place like it....anywhere.

Hi LarryJ, I was just going to post the same thing, LOL. Yes, Venice is extremely safe because where are the bad guys going to go too? They either have to wait for a vaparetto or make arrangements for a water taxi. I don't think many of them would want to swim down the Grand Canal.

Buying "Venitian" glass made in China, shortchanging you or showing your credit card bill in US Dollars versus Euro's, and watching out for the pidgeons seems to basically be the worries of the day.

Have a beautiful time in Venice Lee, it is a delightful city, one that you will never find anywhere else.
