How much of your personal annual budget do you devote to travel?

Perhaps this may be too personal a question for some, but I'm wondering strictly what kinds of percentages of their annual budgets people devote to travel throughout the year. My credit card breaks down the percentages of my types of expenditures (restaurant/health etc.) for me at the end of the year, but I haven't taken the time to tally up all my travel expenditures (meals, lodging, car rentals, hotels etc.) I would guess that maybe I spend maybe 15-20% of my annual budget on travel, but I think that it may actually creep up to closer to, gulp, 25%. Obviously, each individual is in a different life place, but I wonder how Fodorites would weigh in on this, given our propensity for hitting the open roads...

Haven't a clue. And it would be way too much trouble to figure out - since I use my AMEX for both personal and company travel to max the miles. But it's nowhere near 25% - not with two stepdaughters in college and saving for a beach house.

But what really controls my hitting the open road is time - neither the beau nor I have careers that allow a lot of free time - so we're often stuck adding a few day on a business trip - often alone - and are ecstatic if we can get more than 10 days off together.

Not enough, LOL. Seriously letour it varies from year to year. These last months I think my budget is being spent on financing a General Contractor's vacations.

Less than 10%; however, this year it will be more than that because I'm going to Mittel Europa and also (I hope) to Hawaii. I'm trying not to nickle and dime away so much of my disposable income so that I have more with which to travel.

count me in the "I have no idea" club! depends on the year - number of trips and different destinations most likely.

Last year I spent nearly 40% of my net income on travel.

A financial planner would have a heart attack.

It's a good thing I don't have a financial planner.

This will be our first vacation in Europe but our total budget including air, hotels, train, food, car rentals, sights, transportation and everything else is $8,750.00 This year we will devote about 15% of our total yearly budget to travel.

it's vulgar to speak of such things.
just do what's right for your own situation.

It's gonna be up there.

I've taken one trip and have 4 other flights booked and paid for. Probably one more at the end of the year to hit Gold Medallion with Delta.

I don't want to think about it too much.

Budget? Travel or otherwise? Hahahahahaha!

Seriously, though, we travel as cheaply as is comfortable so we can travel as much as possible.

As an aside, we always roll up about $250 worth of loose change around the house before our annual "big" trip as bonus spending money. Try it, folks, no matter what your tax bracket -- you probably have more lying around than you think.

I know this is an old thread - but I have been trying to do some serious accounting/budgeting at my house. It is a timely "end of year" issue for our house as we look to next year. This year we spent about 8% and that was with one trip being all FF miles to travel to India.

This year we have to cut back given some home remodeling etc. Everytimg I get the construction/architect bill, I think what am I doing,.... I would rather just take a trip!

I am now trying to do some more long term planning - What trips in 2008, 2009. I got to have a reason to research on Fodors right! And maybe with more planning I can manage the budget better. I am relooking at how we can rack up the miles, checking out some airfare tracking sites I have never been to before, and vowing to do more "sticking to a budget" when we do get on the road/

Happy New Year!

Yeah I reckon 15% to 20% a year. No wonder the dining room suite is looking so tired! Mmmm, and the kitchen could do with a makeover....

Oh what the hell, where did I put those brochures on Italy.

WHAT BUDGET!!!! We cruise and wait for sales and bargains, yet want a great cabin and itineraries (waiting to take another trans-atlantic cruise)...have taken a winter trip to a warmer spot in S.A. or the Caribbean for the past 30 years (we leve for the D.R. on 2/4 and a trip to CA to visit an elderly relative the end of May...We are retired, but traveling and theatre are our passions.. We've gone to London for theatre in November several times... but the Euro is making it impossible this year..
