How many nights in St Jean Pied de Port

I know this has been done to death but I can't seem to find a specific answer to a question about how long to stay in SJPP before starting my walk on El Camino. The question is that I will arrive in SJPP from Paris on Friday May 27 at 7:12 pm. The pilgrim office will be open until 10:00pm that night so if I hustle I I could get my credentials and begin the walk the next morning. However, this would preclude spending any time in SJPP which seems a bit of a shame and I know the first day is hard so rushing things might not be wise.

Have any of you that have done this got any advice on making this initial step?

Since you're arriving in the evening, you might consider spending at least two more nights to enjoy the village. It's actually quite nice.

I wouldn't plan on doing anything at all until you see the weather forecast for the first leg over the Pyrennes to Ronscesvalles. If it's going to be clear then get going. If it is doubtful then stay. Do not under any circumstances take a risk and walk if the forecast is for rain, fog or storms - even if it says 'possibility of' - listen to people around you - other pilgrims and those at the Credential office. People have died up there, people need to get rescued and have to pay thousands of euro for this.

Do you know about the Camino Frances forum? Your best information will be found there.

The village is pretty enough, although much of it is the setting, but if the object of the exercise is to walk the Camino I wouldn't bother which much time there.

you could spend several hours in St Jean on your second day, then walk 8km to Orisson and stay overnight before heading to Roncesvalles

make sure you book in advance for Orisson http://www.refuge-orisson.com/
