How Many Hours in Toledo?
I am staying in Madrid for 5 days and one of my friends suggested that I take a day trip to Toledo. I want to buy my train ticket before I leave the U.S., so I was wondering how many hours would be good?

Just be careful on Mondays as the whole town seemed closed to me. My son and I went as a daytrip and quite honestly I was glad that we had only planned on 5 hours-it really wasn't that interesting to us and we both have history degrees.There are alot of people who think that it is fabulous so go after the morning rush and plan on lunch there and see what you think. We were lucky to go back to Madrid on an earlier train without paying extra.

This is a difficult question. Many people visit Toledo as a day trip from Madrid but I've visited twice - both times staying 2 full days and found plenty to keep me occupied and very interested. If you plan to visit as a day trip I'd arrive around 10 am and plan to stay until 5 pm or so. This will gibe you time for a nice lunch and break mid day.
Of course it would be helpful to know what time of year you are traveling as the dayligh hours and weather would also weigh into the decision.

I also am someone who stayed in Toledo rather than doing it as a day trip. The more I researched it the more I found I wanted to see so I ended up staying three nights and am glad I did. If I were to do it as a day trip I'd make it as long a day as possible. I'm pretty sure that unless the trains are full you could go back on an earlier one. I did that on a couple of train trips in Spain. In Madrid there were long lines of people wanting to change the trains they had tickets for, but Toledo train station is small so I would think it would be rather easy.

Forego the possible minor discounts on a return train ticket or book one in very later afternoon as Toledo has a host of great sights - an unGodly number of highly decorated awesome churches, the palace Franco once holed up in and neat old lanes, etc.
You can always take the regional trains I believe that have a flat fare and you can just hop on I believe - cheaper and tickets can be used on any train -at least that's the way it was recently as opposed to the high-speed train with higher fares.

We stayed 2 full days and could have stayed longer. Lots to see if you're interested in historic architecture and art. Don't miss the beautiful synagogues. Plot your visit carefully, lots of attractions close at lunch for a few hours.
