How many days needed in Rhine area &/or Bodensee?

Arriving FRA March 25th. Free 26 & 27th and again 31st to April 4th.Is it best to overnight around the river or OK to day trip from FRA?. How many days needed and where to stay? Also thinking of going to Bodensee. How many days needed there to do it justice and where to stay? Can we do both areas or best to focus on one? We will be travelling by train.
Thanks for suggestions

Don't know how many days you should stay, but I recommend Meersburg as a place to stay. The Gasthof zum Bären was a good place to stay. Ask for a room with an oriel widow.

I loved Meersburg.

I think there is not a train station in Meersburg. But I;m sure you could connect by bus. I have never been there, but I am think of going in June. I have always put it off due to the number of changes from Munich then the bus. The Gasthof zum aeren look wonderful; makes me want to go there for sure now.

It is obvious I didn't preview my post. Gasthof zum Baeren amongst other screw-ups.

The big disadvantage of Meersburg is the lack of train connections, that's why I advise against Meersburg as base. Buses are less convenient.
If you are dependent on public transport, the best base is Konstanz because it has connections by rail and boat in all directions. Besides, it is one of the very rare cities in Germany with a notable amount of authentic medieval architecture in its old town, it has a beautiful lake promenade and a lot of things to do in case of bad weather.
Covering the most interesting places that are within easy reach from Konstanz would easily fill about 10 days (if not more). So you'll have to make some choices.
Here is my travel page about Konstanz with tips and photos: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/f86bd/b0dc/

Thank you all for your thoughts.Meersburg does look beautiful but as we don't have very long I think staying on the train lines would make it easier to see more in a short time. Hopefully next trip we will have more time

"Arriving FRA March 25th. Free 26 & 27th and again 31st to April 4th.Is it best to overnight around the river or OK to day trip from FRA?. How many days needed and where to stay?"

It's possible to daytrip to the Middle Rhine region, the Rhine that most visitors want to see, from FRA, but I don't see why anyone would choose to do so. FRA isn't much when it comes to atmosphere, it will cost you more for accommodations, and it will add travel time and cost to your visit.

Assuming that you'll do the Rhine first and Bodensee during the latter time frame, and assuming that you must be somewhere (Frankfurt??) for something important on Monday morning 3/28, I would do as follows. After arrival at FRA, head directly for the Middle Rhine town of your choice by train, and stay Fri and Sat nights. 2+ days in the area is about right. Then book Sunday night wherever you need to be (Frankfurt?)

Where to stay? The villages are pretty quiet in March. Koblenz is the choice if you want city services with something to do in the evening. Koblenz is also a train hub for the area; you can reach all the major Middle Rhine destinations and several on the Mosel river within 30-40 minutes from there. I'd look into a visit to Marksburg Castle in Braubach (12 min.) for sure:

www.marksburg.de

Other villages to visit: Boppard, St. Goar (Rheinfels Castle), Oberwesel, Kaub, Linz, Remagen (WW II museum), and Cochem (Mosel.)

You're alone, right? Once in Koblenz, get yourself a 3-day VRM daypass, or "Tagesticket", at a cost of 34 Euros. This amazing pass lets you use any bus or tram in Koblenz or in any of the other nearby villages and any regional train (RE, RB, MRB, VIA trains) in the VRM region (which surrounds Koblenz in all directions) at any hour of the day. There's a 1-day pass for 17 Euros as well. If you have 2-4 others with you, the 3-day pass costs 40 Euros. When you return to the south on Sunday night, you can use the final day of the pass as far as Kaub on the east bank or Oberwesel on the west bank of the Rhine, so you'll only need to buy a ticket for the stretch from either of those towns to Frankfurt (or whatever your goal is.)

Sorry, "If you have 2-4 others with you..." should read "1-4 others".

A month for Bodensee could be overkill

If it were my trip, I'd do the Rhine and Franconia (W'burg, etc.) as Aramis has suggested.
