We are about to book a flight for a trip to Barcelona over New Year's Eve. We would like to stay at least 6 nights, but possibly 8.
Considering the cost of flights to Europe, we'd like to make the trip as worthwhile as possible, and my husband and I haven't been to very many European locations between the two of us.
How many days is enough (or too many!) to spend in Barcelona in the winter? Should we stick to day trips (Figueres, Montserrat), or travel to another city/country for the last 2-3 nights for a change of scenery?
I really appreciate everyone's advice!
How many days in Barcelona?

You will get all kinds of answers.
Some people don't like the city at all , some (like me) just love it.
It often depends on one's interest.
We spent 8 full days in Barcelona last fall, in 2 weeks we are going for another six days.
You can make many day trips from the city by train .
Spain is a wonderful and diverse country - no need to leave it.

I would split the trip to two locales; Barcelona 3/4 days and take a train/fly to Madrid and give Madrid a chance.
I once spent 10 days in BCN and never left the city. There is so much to see and taking your time is always worth it.
I spend five days last spring, and is was more than long enough for me. But after a few days in a city, I always get a little 'tired' and like to get out!
I think that one week in Barcelona is enough to visit the most important places.
Nevertheless you can take some days trips in Catalonia. I recommend you Sitges, Cadaqués and Montserrat.
And if you've children you can consider the option to go to Port Aventura,a thematic park in Salou (Tarragona).
You can look up at my blog: discover-spain.blogspot.com
There you can find some more useful information about BCN.
Enjoy your trip!
Girona is a nice day trip, only an hour by train.
