How many days do I need in Athens?

I have a stopover on my way home from Africa in Athens, and am wondering how long to spend there. It's right before Xmas, so my parents would want me home sooner rather than later! So I'd like to know the minimum amount of time I need to get a feel for the city and see some of the major archeological sites. I don't want to rush, but I also don't expect to see everything this trip. It's more of an introduction to a place I intended to visit more in depth in the future. Would three full days/5 nights be sufficient? Thanks for any advice!

You could even do just 2 nights, IMHO. One day for the Acropolis and another for the museum.

I agree with travelgourmet. Two or three nights should do it.

Two days more then covers Athens, now , if you are thinking of going outside Athens or to the islands( which I wouldn't in the winter anyways) then you would need more time. Athens only 2 days.

I too would agree with 2 or 3 nights.

If you've never been to Athens then 3 full days is just about right, but take more time if you plan to explore outside the city.

Thank you all so much for the advice, this is great news. I am on an overnight flight from Africa, arriving in the morning, so I can spend that whole day and then one more, and then fly out--my folks will be thrilled! Plus it saves me on hotels

Thanks again Fodors,

I feel that two nights would be good and no more than three nights.
