Thanks to a dear friend, I tapped into this forum 3-4 weeks back for a EU trip later this year and, find it amazing in many regards (very well traveled, helpful people... well with the rare, slightly snippy posters).
I am generally curious how many countries has the typical poster been to, and over how many years? Lest I embarrass myself (just kidding), let me save my own response till I hear from some of you.
How many countries have you been to?

1988, 13 countries...I'm claiming Monaco as a country, not claiming Vatican.
Canada, France, Italy, Spain & New Jersey.
See this thread for lots of answers:
http://fodors.com/forums/threadselect.jsp?fid=2&tid=34486808
26- that includes the one I am going to add in 2 weeks. I first went out of the country in 1983.
o.k.
more than 30 years of travlling
about 20 countries ( more than once in many European countries : France about 20 times.
My tally (~26) has not changed since that 2004 thread. That is so sad.
Very impressive so far.
Consider writing the names of the countries unless you don't want to which is fine.
Canada, US, England, Ireland, Netherlands, France, Italy, Lichtenstein, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Monaco, Ghana
My 7th grade son will be hitting country #17 when we go to Spain in March. And we are the SlowTrav travellers, not the 7 countries in 7 days tourists. Us parents have about 10 countries on top of our kids, mostly 3rd world countries.
China, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Israel, Egypt, US, Canada,
Italy, France, Ireland, Denmark, Holland, Austria, Switzerland, Croatia, Sweden, England,Spain, Monaco (?)
more in the future ( one hopes)
Here's the list: Austria,Bahamas,Belgium,Bermuda,Canada,Czech Republic,England,France,Germany,Greece,Guatemala,India,Italy,Jamaica,Luxembourg,Malaysia,Mexico,Monaco,Holland,Panama,Philippines,Spain,Switzerland,Taiwan
Tunisia (in two weeks),Turkey
Canada, England, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Costa Rica.
That's 15 - lot's more to go. Not counting Canada, my first international trip was 16 years ago.
The US, Great Britain, France, Netherlands, Venezuela--next week I can add Italy but it's still not very impressive--
France, Germany, Monaco, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg, Austria, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Finland, Latvia, Estonia, Russia, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Slovakia, Croatia, Greece, Turkey, Israel, Egypt, Tunisia, Canada, USA.
So 31, not counting various Caribbean islands, Cyprus or Vatican city, over the course of 20 years of foreign travel.
France, Germany, Monaco, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg, Austria, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Finland, Latvia, Estonia, Russia, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Slovakia, Croatia, Greece, Turkey, Israel, Egypt, Tunisia, Canada, USA.
So 31, not counting various Caribbean islands, Cyprus or Vatican city, over the course of 18 years of foreign travel.
Sorry!
Hi,
Canada, Mexico, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Austria, Germany, Italy (Sud Tirol). The last three a few times. Whenever we plan something different, we think, this my be our last trip (you never know) and wind up going back. Of course there's the fact that we really enjoy the time we spend in these area's.
Paul
OK...I can't resist the urge to respond...I do count some as countries that others of you might find questionable:
USA, Canada, Mexico, Bahamas, Panama, Ecuador, Columbia, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Tunisia, England, Ireland, Wales, France, Spain, Monaco, Italy, Vatican, Switzerland, Germany, Luxemborg, Belgium, Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia. This September I'll add Greece and Turkey!
Haven't counted before now, so here it goes, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica,St.Martin,Martinique,St.Thomas,Puerto Rico,Gr.Britian,Ireland, France,Italy,Netherlands,Germany,Switzerland,Denmark,Sweden,Belgium,,Austria, and adding Croatia,Slovenia, and Hungary this summer
Mostly Caribbean since I grew up in Miami...which can almost count as a country now!
Canada, Spain, St. Thomas, St. John, Virgin Gorda, Jamaica, Grand Cayman Island, Puerto Rico, and Andros Island. Adding Italy this spring.
Besides the US 29: Canada, Mexico. England, Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Monaco, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Vatican City, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Russia, Lichtenstein, Egypt and Turkey.
So far. Obviously I still have a lot left to go.
One of my closest friends is a real traveler (versus a tourist, which is what I consider myself) and she's been to over 100.
Let's see, UK (Scotland, Wales, N. Ireland, England (where I grew up)), USA (where I live now), Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, Monaco, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Malta, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic, Poland, Lithuania, Slovakia, Romania, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Ukraine, Russia, Mongolia, China, Pakistan, India, Bhutan, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand.
I make that 46, (or 49 if you count the UK countries separately) plus Vatican City, some Caribbean islands so long ago I'm not sure which ones, train trips across Bulgaria and Latvia, and one night between planes in Japan. Most of this is 1997 onwards.
Interesting question - never stopped to think about it. I grew up in Africa and now live in Australia. I quickly counted up 31 countries in UK, Europe, Nth America, Africa, Asia and Sth Pacific. I've been travelling with my parents (initially in Africa) since about the age of 9. I've seen more than I realised!!
Good thing to itemize so that I don't forget (and I do have a brief journal of each trip that I could review, but from the top of my head)
Belgium,Zaire, England (3 times), Ireland, France(twice), Spain, Italy, Germany, Denmark, Estonia, Russia, Sweden, Finland, Philipines, Thailand, China, India,Ecuador, Egypt.,Austria..I didn't include Canada or Mexico or New Jersey! thanks for asking.
So guys, what are the rules? Are the members of the UK separate countries? Can I count both St. Maarten and St. Martin? Countries visited on day trips? If so, I'm at 42:
U.S., Canada, Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Costa Rica, Venezuela, Peru, Colombia, Cuba, Bahamas, St. Maarten, Barbados, St. Vincent, Trinidad
England, Scotland, Wales, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Greece, Israel, Egypt
Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, Cambodia,
Australia, New Zealand, French Polynesia, Cook Islands, Fiji
Questionable: Myanmar (day trip), St. Martin, Bequia, Mustique...And what about Puerto Rico - not really a country, does that qualify?
Born in 1977... it was quite a few years before I really started to travel, though. =)
However, I have been to 12 countries. Going to Ireland in March and that will be 13. A few have been brief stops or one day visits, however.
Hi

I guess I started travelling for real in 1994. Over the years I have been to Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, France, Holland, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Greece, Azerbaijan, United Arab Emirates, Tanzania, South Africa, The Maldives, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, China, Japan, Peru, Bolivia, USA and Mexico. You can read my trip reports and see pictures on my homepage http://gardkarlsen.com
Regards
Gard

I'm at 27 now and our eight-year-old son is up to 15. Living in Europe certainly makes it easier to fill out the list - lunch in Liechtenstein anyone? We each have a Word document and just add to it whenever we visit a new country. Our one dilemma has been what to do with countries that have changed name/configuration, i.e. Yugoslavia, as I was there in 1984 and again in 2004
New Zealand, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Italy, Spain, Luxembourg, Netherlands, France, Germany, Austria, and USA. I have lived in U.K., Ireland and Australia.
Does Hawaii count as a country?

UK (NI, Scotland, Wales, England, Isle of Man),Ireland, France (incl Monaco), Italy (incl Vatican), Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Holland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Germany (W & E the 1st time + Berlin as a strange anomaly), Austria, Switzerland, Iceland. Canada, USA, Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina. Turks & Caicos, Bermuda. Cyprus, Greece (just), Kenya.
Singapore. (27 to 32 depending upon how we count)
My vote - Vatacan City should count as a country - Monaco should not.
Fortunately since the old 2004 thread I can claim a few more countries. I went to Sweden, Norway, Denmark, mainland China in 2005. Last year I went to Turkey. I was also in Australia a few weeks ago.
So this brings the tally up to about 23-24.
Let me think... Canada, Russia, Finland, France, Switzerland, Ukraine, Latvia, Korea, Japan, Costa Rica, Ireland... my problem is that I keep returning to these same places! 11 countries for me.
Netherlands (we live there)
Belgium, Luxemburg , France, Monaco, Malta, Germany, England, Wales, Switserland, Italy, Czech Rep., Slowakia, Austria, Norway, US, Mexico
Usually 1 county per vacation.
England twice, France three times, Switzerland, Italy, Denmark, Sweden, and Mexico.
In my twenty years of travel, I have been to: Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, China, Japan, Taiwan, India, Sri Lanka, Eygpt, Dubai, Omen, Kenya, South Africa, Morocco, Spain, Portugal, France, Monaco,Belgium, Netherland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Croatia, Bosnia, Latvia, Italy, Greece, Turkey, England, Wales, Scotland, Denmark, Sweden, Iceland, Peru, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Canada and USA.
Some of the countries above I have visited more than once, European countries, USA, Australia, China, Thailand and Malaysia.
Estonia and Russia this year.
Gosh, people, it really is impressive. Noting that there are only 193 countries in the world (including Vatican), anything more than 15 is pretty impressive to me. Almost makes me feel sad for resigning from my last job six years back (too much travel!) that guaranteed an overseas trip every other month.... Not!
For what it is worth, I have been to nearly ten countries. This is also affected by the fact that I live in the U.S. so NY to NJ travel is not exactly a new country.
Not nearly as many as I want to!
This is a fun thread....
Here's my list
France, Italy, Germany, Austria, Greece, Hungary, Monaco, England U.S., Jamaica, Bahamas, Mexico various other carribean islands. So that makes 12....I can't wait to ad on to the list!!
Layla
US (home), Canada, Mexico, Panama, Venezuela, Colombia, Australia, New Zealand, Kenya, Tanzania, Morocco, Spain, Gibraltar, France, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Italy, England, Aruba, Grand Cayman, St. Martin, Martinique, Grenada, Curacao, Dominican Republic, Antigua, all since 1978.
We have visited 34 countries on 5 continents, not counting the many islands on cruises,or airport stopovers to change planes.
We traveled extensively through the former Yugoslavia before the war and their break-up into 6 countries, of which we visited 4, making our total 37.
Most of our trips have been to only one country at a time, spending 10-18 days, usually fly-drive trips.
Jimjim & DW
There are only 193 countries in this world? AND I get to count the Vatican?

Well...then I must do a re-tally...
North America: US (home!) and Canada
South America: Argentina and Chile
Africa: Tunisia
Asia: Taiwan, Japan
Europe: UK, Ireland, The Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Finland, Russia, Estonia, Italy, Spain, France, The Vatican.
I'm currently missing 2 continents: Antarctica and Australia.
This means I've only visited 11.9% of the world. I have a lot of catching up to do!
NA - US, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica
EU - Ireland, UK, France, Neth, Germany, Austria, Italy, Greece, Switzerland
SA - Peru
Australia
Africa - South Africa July '07
McNyc - if you ever make it to Australia - head to New Zealand as well and you can get a sight seeing flight from the south island over Antartica.
Mexico, Canada, Scotland, England, Switzerland, Germany, France, Spain, Belize, Australia
I could boost my numbers....maybe even Canadian Provinces! Yes, that would help.
Wow, it seems like I should have more!
Can we start counting US States and Territories separately too
United States (26 States), Mexico,Japan, Okinawa, Hong Kong, Korea, China, Mongolia, Malaysia, Thailand, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Iran, Syria, Jordan, Turkey, Russia, Ukraine, Germany, Romania, Sweden, Finland, France, Spain, Portugal, England, Wales. 10 Provinces in Canada
United States (26 States), Mexico,Japan, Okinawa, Hong Kong, Korea, China, Mongolia, Malaysia, Thailand, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Iran, Syria, Jordan, Turkey, Russia, Ukraine, Germany, Romania, Sweden, Finland, France, Spain, Portugal, England, Wales. 10 Provinces in Canada (home).
Until the year 2000, I had only visited our dear friends in Canada. After my first trip to France, in September 2000, I became addicted to travel, and since then have tried to make one trip each year:
2000: France
2001: England and Wales
2002: Italy
2003: Netherlands and southern Germany
2004: Spain
2006: Denmark, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, and Austria (also northern Germany and Munich)
Maybe next year we'll add Ireland and Scotland
Every one of those countries has turned out to be wonderful! I have no reason to believe the rest of Europe, at least, isn't just as lovely.
Ooo...thanks Naplo999 for the tip!
Fun post! I'm 28, have been traveling to Europe since 2002, and am up to 20 countries and will be adding a few new ones this year. We usually travel to Europe twice a year. I haven't ventured outside of Europe yet, but plan to do so next year.

What a fun post. I just know the answer is "not enough".
Over the past 20-25 years, have travelled to:
US, Canada, Mexico, Belize, Bahamas
Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, England, Scotland, France, Spain, Greece, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland
Egypt, New Zealand, Malaysia, Japan
(Some countries more than once)
Next trip planned for May to Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.
This is fun...why doesn't someone start a thread about how many US states have you visited. I got paranoid about flying when I had young kids and planned vacations around car trips.
Deb15July, Why don't you start it that U.S. states thread? Better to cross post in U.S. than Europe forum.
For what it is worth, I have many friends with similar issues with airtravel (specially after 9-11) as you so don't feel alone. In fact, I used to do at least one out of town trip (by air) a week! in my last job, and really can't stand more than one every other week now. That said, as I told someone in my office the other day, you gotta find a way to get over it. You will find it worth it.
Good day.
I have been to 12:
North America: U.S. (home), Canada, and Mexico
Central America and Caribbean: Belize, Bahamas, Jamaica
Europe: Ireland, Spain, England, Portugal, Northern Ireland (though not technically its own country, I guess)
Asia: India (many times)
34 US States, all the public islands of Hawaii (15+), Canada (x3) Mexico (x3) England (x13) Wales, Scotland, Ireland (x2) Italy (x2) France (Paris x2, Normandie ), Norway, Denmark, Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, San Juan, Bahamas (x2), Jamaica, Aruba,Tortola, St Thomas, Bermuda. 12 cruises - Alaska (2), Western Europe (1), Pacific coastal (1), Mexican Riviera (1),Riviera Maya (1) Caribbean (6).
Right i'm 24 and i've been to
UK (all 4 countries)
Ireland (southern)
France
Spain
Netherlands
Luxembourg
Belgium
Greece
Germany
Norway
Poland
Czech Republic
Bulgaria
Plus am going to Hungary and Croatia this year and Australia next year
OK, here's my list...
USA (where I live), Mexico (x2), Canada (x4), St. Martin (x2), Martinque, Ireland, England (x2), the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland (lived here for 3 months), France, Spain, Portugal, Italy (x3, will be 4 later this year), San Marino, the Vatican (x2), Austria, Czech Repbulic, Poland, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Australia, New Zealand, China (Hong Kong) and will be adding Turkey later this year.
And the grand total is...26!
Since July 2002, I've been to Taiwan, Malaysia, India, China, England, Scotland, Malta, Italy, The Vatican, Greece, Hungary, Czech Republic, Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, Germany, Liechtenstein, Austria, Spain, Switzerland.

My problem is I fell in love with Italy and keep going back there, so I haven't added any new ones since
Belguim
France
Netherlands
Switzerland
Spain
England
Bahamas
Mexico
Canada
USA (41 states)
In September I'm going to:
Italy
Vatican
Greece
Turkey
So 14 but I'm only 26. I plan on seeing at least 50 in my lifetime!
I had never counted until today. . .
NA: Canada (home), USA, Mexico,
Europe: England, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic, Italy, Vatican City
Asia: Japan, Thailand, Singapore, China, Hong Kong
Pacific: Australia, New Zealand, Cook Islands
That is 19 if I include home, and the "questionable" ones like Hong Kong/China as two (I did go prior to 1999), and Vatican City. I could push it and include Wales, but we only went for lunch, when I was about 12! And I did sit in the airport in Tahiti for a couple of hours . . .
I'll be able to add Spain and Greece by May! Then I'll say I have 20!
U>S><Canada, Mexico, Belize Panama, Barbados, Bermuda, Jamaica, Dominican Republic Puerto Rico, Peru, Guyana;Guadalope Ireland, Wales Scotland England, Spain,Belgium, France, Lichtenstein, Germany,Sweden Russia, Chech Republic;Austria, Italy, Vatican, Turkey, Greece, Switzerland; Syria; Morroco, Senegal Nigeria, Gibralter(probably doesn't count), India; Korea, Japan, Thailand,Laos, Myamar.
I feel seriously undertraveled compared to most of the reponses, but...since I really started traveling only 5 years ago....
Ireland, England, Spain, Italy,France, Germany,Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg,Switzlerland, Mexico, Brazil, Canada, US,Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong (I know, not a country). This year, I am planning to visit Denmark, Sweden, Finland,Norway, Russia, Czech Republic, Poland. (for pleasure ...I will vist many more for work). Next year, hoping to go to Shanghai and Croatia. As I am now living in Switzerland, "visit" France most weekends to do my shopping!
It would be more if I could stop falling in love with every place I go and having to return.
Obviously, USA, then Mexico, Italy, Ireland, Wales, England, Germany, Austria, Hungary, France, Monaco, Slovenia, Croatia, Belgium, Greece, Turkey, New Zealand, and Spain. Adding two more in October with a trip to Egypt and Jordan. So, a total of 17 foreign countries for now.
New Zealand (live here), Australia, Indonesia (Bali), USA, Canada, England, Scotland, Wales, and just returned this week from Germany, Austria, Italy, France, Czech Republic, Emirates (Dubai), (I guess that's 14 in all) not counting Vatican.
Not counting the UK's separate provinces as countries, ignoring time in European microstates (like San Marino or the Isle of Man) and not counting 3-hour stopovers in odd Arab sheikhdoms at 2 in the morning: 48 countries.
Or 51 if you count now independent bits of ex-Yugoslavia as separate even though you haven't been there since they were all the same place.
Oops
That should be 52 or 56, depending on the umpire's ruling about Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Macedonia.
PS: Mrs F wants to know whether Transdniestria counts, or whether she's got to call it part of Moldova.
Flanneruk, Per http://tinyurl.com/2akhla, I am afraid the answer is no. Still very impressive. If I knew you, I would ask you in person how you file so many places apart from each other in your brain. But I don't so I won't
Very impressive. I think you have more frequent flier miles than Mr. Bush.
I count trips as well as cities and countries since I have a habit of returning to places I like over & over and yes I am including Hawaii but not Canada...
Switzerland 5x
Venice 2x
Amsterdam 1x
Paris 1x
Mexico 17x
Hawaii 5x
Caribbean 5x
..whoops forgot Dubai, Iceland (how could I!) and Monaco...In all seriousness, it is the memories; this almost feels like a "trophy count"
Wow! Lots of travel miles here to count on.
35 countries over 30 years. Took a number of years off to get married and start a family. Shortest time in any country anyone?
About 30 seconds in Scotland. Got out of one small boat, walked across the pier and got into another. I'd like to go back and see a bit more of the country.
Comfyshoes (who I think is accusing me of boasting, but I'm not because a quick count in any large company or government department will bring up lots of people who've visited over 100 countries) makes an excellent point.
We need rules for this. Comfy suggests it's a country if it's a UN member: I'd add it has to have been a country while you were there, and you have to have actually been to it (ie gone through immigration, or walked about after baggage claim if it's in Schengen), and not an airside transit lounge on its territory. Or got off the train and left the station.
New Zealand (born there), Australia, Hong Kong (before the handover), Singapore, Holland, France, England, United States,Czechia and Israel (Live there) and Germany.
Transit in Maldives, Berne, Tahiti.
Flanneruk,
I didn't imply anything.
Hey Man, Comfy believes in people
Actually, if anything, I am deeply impressed and slightly envious. I would really like to hear what someone like you have to say so far as differences (beyond the poverty etc.... that we all know) between poorer countries and the western ones. I have a certain untested hypothesis about money and happiness/well being of a society that hinges on the preoccupation to forever want more versus having the time to not rush "stuff" and, but that is a topic for a future thread.
Yes, I agree with your rules that it is okay so far as it was a country when you visited, and that you have to go through customs and step outside (otherwise my own list becomes twice as long).
Judging from your nom de plume, okay to say I hope you enjoy fish/chips? Thanks.
comfy and flanner...why is the UN the measure? they don't recognise taiwan and that is clearly a separate country.
Well, I had to start somewhere.... Feel free to list Taiwan.
Comfyshoes,

Thanks for the advice about a post related to visiting US states. I'm new to this site and I forget that there are different forums. I will blame you for making me check into yet another forum...since I've been planning my Italy trip my house is a wreck and my filing is totally out of control.
so...based on your screen name...i need to buy new comfy shoes for my upcoming trip to Italy. I broke my foot last Mother's Day (not a bad time to visit the ER...got right in), and I was told the swelling in my foot would not completely go away for about 1 yr. So...still have shoes I can't wear...got any ideas on what I should buy for lots of walking in about 2 months?
hmm..took my first trip in 2004 when I was 19. Since then have visited:
England: seven times
Wales: once
France: four times
Netherlands: twice
Belgium: once
Italy: once
Vatican: once
Germany: twice
Switzerland: once
Mexico: twice
Canada: around two dozen times
going back to the UK, France and also Hungary in April, and Egypt in the fall.
Oh, and most of the caribbean.
United States, Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Monaco, Ireland, Northern Ireland (UK), Mexico, Bahamas, Slovakia, Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic... Vatican if we're counting that.
First left the U.S. in 2003. It's been a busy 4 years! Currently planning a trip to Tanzania.
Deb15July, Ma'am, I chose this name because many of my friends say they feel comfy with me, and because it was a choice between ComfyShoes (somewhat relevant to a travel forum, no?) and doggiepoo (much discussed here, in the context of old European cities and its four legged inhabitants). I let my ego come in picture and simply didn't feel in sync with doggiepoo.
Sorry I can't advice except to say you usually get what you pay for, and this I sincerely believe, shoes are a reflection of the soul of a human.
21 countries, began traveling at 3 months so was bitten with the travel bug at or near birth.
Europe and Asia are included. Have visited Asia once and Europe 3 times, 4th upcoming this summer.
MvK
Since 1995 I've visited these countries, some of them more than once, and some of them even before 1995:
(I live in Croatia) US, Mexico, UK, France, Germany, Spain, the Checz Republic, Austria, Italy, Hungary, Finland, Israel, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Switzerland, Former Yu Rep. of Macedonia, Bosnia, Greece, also the small ones: Monaco, Vatican, San Marino and Lichtenstein.
I guess the airports in Sweden and Danemark don't count.
Well, not a very impressive list for a person who loves travelling so much, but that's all I've been able to afford so far.
Arjana, Pretty impressive list to me.
Several times to Italy, France and Germany. Also been to Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Croatia, Bosnia, Slovenia, and Canada.
Got the international travel bug in March, 1987. Since then ...
For fun: France (lots), Italy, what used to be called Yugoslavia (Slovenia now), Austria, Germany, UK, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Switzerland, Turkey ... so that's 12
For work: UAE, Bulgaria, Canada, Malaysia, S. Korea, Japan (+ Turkey, France, UK) ... so that's 6 new ones
= 18
Ireland is coming up in 3 weeks with another Turkey in June.
I'm getting old, trying to do these all from memory...let's see...
Canada, Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, El Salvadore, Nicaragua, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Bolivia, Cuba, Bahamas, Haiti, Dominican Republic, BVI, Angilla, Montserat, Nevis, St. Kitts, Antigua, Dominica, Martinique, St. Martin/Marteen, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Barbados, Trinidad, Canary Islands, Iceland, Scotland, England, Wales (I count them individually), France, Italy, Bermuda.
I know I'm missing some, but I guess that is 39 so far. First travelled out of the U.S. in 1970, last trip was Dec 2006.
dave
Yep, forgot Jamaica, Cayman's, Turks & Caicos, Swan Island (I didn't count the USVI or Puerto Rico, since they are U.S. possessions)
US, Canada, Russia, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Belorus...and adding 4 this year (France, England, Czech Republic, Belgium). First trip was to Canada and I was fairly young, maybe 1986/1987...at 9 or 10 years old. Sad that I live in Texas and haven't made it to Mexico yet, but have been to Canada three times.
US, UK, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Italy, Germany, France, Belgium, Mexico, Jamaica, Turks & Caicos, Grand Cayman, Bahamas - 17 so far?
hoping to do a Baltic cruise next summer...
Started traveling internationally 3 1/2 years ago....so 5 countries so far - Italy (1), UK (5), Ireland (1), France (2) and Canada (2). However, in 3 weeks I am headed off for a 7 week trip to Italy, Belgium, UK, Netherlands, Germany and Austria!
70-odd counting days spent on Caribbean islands while on 2 cruises.
But I don't go for stamps on passports. I have spent over 70 weeks in America at different times, been to Thailand and Tenerife a few dozen times each. I even got to New Zealand 3 times.
I travel around countries too and have travelled extensively in many of the countries I have visited (like two 7 week holidays in India).
24 since 1992, which was my first trip abroad (Italy and Greece) when I was 14.
Canada, Mexico, Jamaica, Cayman Islands, Dominican Republic, St. Maarten, UK, Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Italy, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Poland, Hungary, Greece, Morocco, India
I hope to ramp that up with Thailand and Vietnam next year, Belize or Costa Rica the year after.
16 so far, adding 3 more later this year (Italy, Croatia, Greece)
Mexico, Canada, St. Lucia, Bahamas, England, Ireland, Scotland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Netherlands, Spain, Luxembourg, Belgium, Czech Republic, US.
Currently living in the Republic of Texas. Does that count?
In addition, England, France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, China, Peru, Puerto Rico- US Territory, Turkey, Canada, Mexico, Czech Republic, Bahamas, Virgin Islands, all over the US, the controversial Monaco & Vatican, and the Netherlands. No whirlwind Europe in ten days tours. Visited more than half on the list on multiple occasions.
Now, where do I WANT to travel? Morocco (thanks to JGG's recently posted photos and trip report), Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Chile, Ecuador, Russia, South Africa, New Zealand, Tibet, Egypt & Israel.

There are 38 places on the list which just about matches my age. Would love to keep that up and let my birthday cake candles represent countries visited!
Now, unfortunately, some of these places I visited before the age of 10 so I don't remember a lot and another handful of countries were stops on cruises so I only got a day or so... but I was there.

WOW! I am glad I wrote all of this out!!!
Also, under Italy, I've been to most all the small towns in Tuscany as well
Here is my chronological list:
Canada (home), USA, UK (England, Scotland & Wales), France, Belgium, Greece, Spain, Moroco, Mexico, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Netherlands, Ethiopia, Poland, Italy, Vatican, Hungary, Austria, Czech Republic, Portugal, Switzerland and Brazil. Next is Chile.
Thats a great question and I've never counted.. so i'll try to remember - somewhat in order beginning about 20 yrs ago..
US(home),Mexico, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Germany, Holland, Belgium, UK (England, Scotland, Wales), France, Monaco, Italy, Greece, Austria, Switzerland, Yugoslavia (then - now i guess Croatia),Spain, Portugal, Greece, Turkey, Israel, Egypt, Japan, China (HKG, Mainland), Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Singapore, Thailand, Venezuela, Panama, Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Hungary...
That was interesting...the answer is something like 35 countries....based on my definition of country? Some of this was biz travel - which means I have alot more to see and experience of the world! However, my real interest now is not seeing necessarily "new" countries - but more exploration of many of the ones above - beginning in 25 days when my family leaves for Italy, Switzerland and France to introduce my 3 young children to their first experience outside the US!!!
22:
South Pacific: Australia, New Zealand
Asia: Singapore, Malyasia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Nepal, India, Hong Kong, Peoples' Republic of China.
Middle East: Israel, Egypt
Europe: USSR (as it was then), Cyprus, Austria, Italy, France, England, Republic of Ireland
Americas: Canada, USA, Brazil (later this year).
Haha don't have much traveling under my belt since I only first left the country 8 years ago...
Europe: England, France, Switzerland, Italy
North America: Canada, Mexico
Other: Bermuda, Bahamas, Aruba, Barbados
Only 10 countries, but I'm only 18, plenty of chances to add to the list.
England, France, Switzerland, Spain, Czech Republic, Italy, Netherlands, Austria
Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, Brazil, Argentina, Peru,
So that's 14 (I live in the U.S.).
Will add Germany and Denmark this summer.
This thread seems to have found a second life with a big hiatus between Feb & April.
I live to travel ( all for pleasure). Some of you may be familiar with the Traveler's Century Club.
http://www.travelerscenturyclub.org/
Granted, their criteria is pretty liberal, but according to their list I have visited 119 countries and I hope to visit a few more in the future ( 5 or 6 new ones later this year). There is nothing like exploring the world we live in! It is getting smaller & smaller and easier to explore.

Next goal is all 7 continents - 2 to go.
And still so many places to go.
Paulchili:
Well, sort of thanks for introducing the Travellers' Century Club.
But it does rather make it easy to inflate your travelling, doesn't it?
Java's a different country from Bali? Lichtenstein counts? Lampedusa? Wales? PEI? Central Istanbul's in a different country from its eastern outskirts? Majorca's separate from other bits of Catalan-speaking Spain? Corfu's not in Greece?
You'd practically qualify for a century by walking to the newsagent.
Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Mexico, Bahamas, Puerto Rico, England, France, Holland, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, and Spain.
Going back to Italy in less than 2 weeks!!!!
flanneruk - sounds a little bit like sour grapes to me. I did say that the Century Club is liberal. Even when I remove the "illegitimate" countries like Scotland, Wales, etc ( and I agree, they should not be counted separately) - I am still well over 100.
By the way - Liechtenstein is a separate country - a constitutional monarchy with a government, minister, parliament, courts, flag, the whole nine yards ( and no, I wasn't there). Look it up:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liechtenstein
A more responsible count of current states is in Statesman's Year Book ( 192) or World Atlas:
http://www.worldatlas.com/nations.htm which lists 189 - 194 countries, depending on different criteria (BTW - they do list Liechtenstein)
Lichtenstein (and I've been there, so it's not sour grapes):
Not quite the whole nine yards. Subcontracts foreign affairs to Switzerland.
But most importantly of all, it's not in the EBU and therefore doesn't compete in the Eurovision Song Contest
By comparison to which, what's mere membership of the UN?
Flanneruk - how can I argue against EBU ? Makes UN look insignificant ( and unfortunately UN is getting more & more insignificant & irrevelant - but that's a different subject matter)
I was amused by the "Turkey in Europe" - sounds like a bird on its holidays.
Some of my best friends are Liechtensteiners. I know its the size of a postage stamp - but they do breed.
From Australia:
Singapore, Taiwan, Phillipines, UK (lived), Ireland (lived), Canada (lived), USA (5 times), Italy (2 times, France, Spain, Greece (2 times), Austria, Switzerland, Netherlands, Germany.

Anyway, quoting Young Mr Grace from Are You Being Served, You have all done very well.
These lists make me realize I need to get packing... and stop going to Italy and branch out a little

I popped into the Europe area to glean a little information about Romania, where I am going on Thursday, and saw this interesting thread.
Romania will be my 88th country, with country as defined by the Travelers Century Club. I will hit 100 in September, 2009.
An interesting website that will let you list all the countries you've been to all the states and then draw you a map and tell you the percentage of the world's countries you have visited ...

I started traveling abroad in 1995. The countries are Ireland, England, Scotland, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Greece, Italy, Spain, Canada, Mexico, Bahamas, Belize, Guatamala, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Australia and New Zealand. So 23 besides the U.S.
This question starting me to thinking and adding up, I haven't thought of how many countries I have visited.
All in all I have been to 21 countries, spending time in them. I have touched down in airports all over but the 21 are the countries I got to know on a first name basis, most of them since 1980 ish.
And I am grateful!
Boy, this is taxing my brain, because 30 years ago while in college I spent a semester in Europe with a railpass and hopped all over. Here's that list:
Denmark
Sweden
Norway
England
Spain
France
Germany (Including both East & West Berlin & CheckPoint Charlie, back in the day when the wall was up)
Czech (Prague, totally different in 1973!)
Netherlands
Now in the last decade or so:
Germany
Austria
Switzerland
Italy
Japan
Brazil
Mexico
France (and back again in May this year!)
United States (Home)
Canada
France
Italy
Greece
I guess I'm up to 25-26 now based on my count in January. I added Brazil and Israel last April and November.
It doesn't feel like that many though. I need to find a few more countries to go to.
UK (where I'm from)
USA (where I live at the moment)
Canada
Greece (favourite country, spent more than 3 years there)
Spain (15 trips)
Italy (4)
Portugal (1)
Ireland (1)
Morocco (1)
Croatia (1)
Turkey (1)
Holland (2)
Belgium (1)
Germany (2)
Well, that's only 14, and unlikely to increase as I return to Greece and UK several times a year!
Canada, Bermuda, England, Scotland, France, Switzerland, and Italy.
I'm 29, been traveling abroad since 2002, and have been to 22 countries. I will be adding at least 2 this year and, depending on what we end up doing in the fall, maybe 3.
I'm always impressed by how well traveled fodorites are...I never would have visited some of the places I have had it not been for recommendations on this board.
Tracy

Not enough! Only 15 when I stop and count.
Canada (home - 9 Provinces and one Territory), US, Mexico, England, Wales, Scotland, France, Greece, Austria, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Australia.
I worked on a couple of TV travel series and arranged shoots in lots more countries (Africa, Maldives, Japan, etc), so I feel like I've travelled more than I actually have!
25, if we consider Andorra a country...

I usually ignore threads like these . . . but like everyone else, it got me making a list . . .
Canada (Home) All 10 provinces multiple times
US (Born) At least 38 states (most multiple times) & I lived in 2 as a kid
Mexico (x2 by car)
England (x2)
Scotland
Jamaica
Panama (x2)
Antigua
Cuba (x2 including our driving trip)
France (x6 or 7)
Spain (x2)
Italy (x2) I guess Sicily can’t be called a different country . . .
China
Hungary
Austria
Poland - our 'lunch in Warsaw' visit
Guyana
I will add to the list I am sure, but there are many countries that we don't want to go to - quite frankly - for numerous reasons but with safety & comfort being prime considerations. I don't need (or want) to see the whole world.

Since my last posting in June 08, I have added to my previous total of 111 these countries:
Mozambique, Lesotho, Mauritius, Reunion, Seychelles, Maldives, Nepal, Bhutan,Qatar and Bahrain. Unfortunately could not get into Sri Lanka or Tibet due to political problems and it is not likely I will return to either.
Total now is 121.
Future plans include New Caledonia, Vanuatu, New Zealand, Phillipines and Brunei (God willing)
Since my last post we are now at 44 , just returned this past monday from Egypt, Jordan and Isarel
