You have to remember, there are about $200 in taxes and surcharges on NY-London tickets and this has surged recently....if you want to think about it....$540 represents what would be advertised as $170 each way based on round trip with taxes and surcharges extra...how much lower can it go, who really knows...29 December is still holiday season...late January might be better.

I found $518 R/T on Lufthansa but it requires connections
There are non-stop flights on www.1800flyeruope.com for $518.
I think you should shop like the dickens and book ASAP. Fares are more likely to go up than down.
I'm actually going to London that same time period and purchased a ticket from Philly to Heathrow for about $630 on British Airways. Those prices seem pretty good and if I were you I'd buy now! Enjoy your trip!!
thanks for your help everyone!
NYC-London tickets for December cost anywhere from $480-$750. If you book early, you can get British Airways for about $500 plus/minus $25.
