how long before passport expires do you need to renew?
Hi all

an upcoming business trip to Brasilia made me realize I better do something and fast!

My passport is finally about to expire. May 2003. ouch! where did those ten years go.

anyway, I'm heading to Brasilia soon, Mexico City in 3 weeks, and for fun Buenos Aires in March, not to mention before the end of April SOMEWHERE in Europe dammit! Maybe Rome, definitely London very soon.

am I cutting it close on any of these destinations? I know different countries may have different rules. I'm checking with the embassies but thought I'd run a post here to see if anyone knows off the top of their heads.

would be a bummer if I had to renew now, I was hoping to have those 4 - 5 extra stamps in this very passport, b/c it would completely fill it! I am that close.

how many of y'all have completely filled your passports (or asked for extra filler pages)?

I have always heard that you should renew it if there is less than 6 months left.
Also, I have heard that if you run out of pages in your book , it can be a real mess when trying to catch your flight home.

Quick - run to your post office, fill in the renewal paperwork and pay the extra fee to put a rush order in.

Just think of the new stamps as the start of the next 10 yrs.

Some countries require that a vistor's passport remain valid for 3 months PAST the date the person will depart that country. So if you were to travel to one of those countries from April 20 to April 30, 2003, for example, your passport would need to be valid through July 2003.
And you will need to allow time to have your passport renewed and mailed to you.
If it is a US passport that you need to renew, you can download the form.
According to the website for the Brazilian embassy in the US, your passport has to be valid for at least six months AFTER your arrival date. You will also need a visa to enter the country. The visas cost US$100 each. You should check the following websites:

http://travel.state.gov/foreignentryreqs.html - US State Dept info

http://www.braziltourism.org/visas.shtml - Brazalian embassy tourist information.
