How late is too late for visiting the Dolomoites?

We are hoping to visit the Dolomites for a couple days this fall. No serious hiking planned. A mountain drive, a cable car up and a stroll or two, enjoy the scenery - that sort of thing.

I realize the weather is never truly predictable, but any general guidelines that can help us to decide if we should adjust either our trip schedule or itinerary and save the Dolomites for a different visit?

We have no dates set yet, but are talking anywhere from late September to even early November.
