We are traveling from a Florence day trip to Rome and are not sure of the best time to arrive at Termini. Would like to spend as much time as possible in Florence, but are concerned about returning late to Rome, especially because this is our first trip to Rome. Would appreciate hearing from experienced Rome travelers.
How late is too late at Termini station?

Termini is pretty easy...taxis and buses are right out front, so I would recommend taking one or the other back to your Rome hotel.. Doesn't matter how late it is really.
I agree.
What is your question?
Time to arrive at Termini on departure to Florence or return from Florence?
And what make it "best?"
As much as time as possible in Florence means leaving Rome early and returning late. Is there more to this than consulting the train schedule at www.trenitalia.com?
And what do you think happens if you return late to Rome?
No need for this harshness, greg. The OP clearly was asking if late arrivals to Termini were a problem.
We told her no, they weren't.
Glad to hear that arriving late to Termini is not a problem. We are actually coming from Venice to Florence, then to Rome. Now planning to arrive in Rome around (not that late) since we will still have to check into our hotel.
Arriving in Rome around 8.
Evening is just beginning in Rome at 8. Streets will be busy, lots going on .. no problem!
