I believe the precise distance is 32 kilometers, or 20 miles. The non-stop train to Termini Central Station runs daily every 30 minutes, takes 32 minutes, and costs Lire 17.000, or roughly US$ 8.00. At Termini, you connect to trains going to all parts of the country. There is also a local commuter train departing every 15 minutes, costing Lire 9.500 (US$4.50), which stops at the local train stations on the edges of the city center (Trastevere, Ostiense, Tuscolana, Tiburtina), and which in a few cases is more convenient depending upon the location of one's hotel.

Taxi will cost LIT75,000-95,000, possibly a tad less. Might be a shade more if you have a pay the small add-on for extra bags.

The train, don't forget, won't get you to your hotel. You'll have to schlep the bags to the subway, a bus, or a taxi. The taxi ride will likely run under $10 for most centrally located hotels, from the Termini.

The difference is likely to be less than $10, 15 at the outside.

There's also a 'shuttle' service that may be able to take you directly to your hotel, and it will cost quite a bit less than the cab, and possibly even less than the train for two.

See www.twenj.com/rometwob.htm#transport
