How do I take train from Florence, IT to Salzburg, Austria?
How do I do this and how long is the trip and how many transfers? DH wants to add Salzburg & Vienna to our trip to Italy. So we'd train from Florence to Salzberg (approx 8-9 hrs?), stay a few days then train to Vienna (approx 3 hrs?)for a few days and home from there.
Any suggestions on B&B's in either place, things to do, see, etc. are greatly appreciated! We like photography, scenery, some museums, some history, some hiking, and of course good food. I SHOULD make him do this part. I thought I was done LOL!!! Wait...now he wants to go into Germany too. Oh, well more questions for you all later.

When checking schedules on the Wunderbar bahn.de site put in a typical date before early December as after early Dec, when winter schedules start the Italian railways have as yet not listed many trains even though these trains will run like they did before
Thus a search for say anytime after Dec 11 or so will show a paucity of trains at odd hours and not nearly the many more frequent trains that will be running.
This always seems to occur with Italian schedules around the first of June, when summer schedules come in and early Dec when winter schedules start.
Often trains are loaded a smattering at a time and not all may be loaded until a few days before the start of the new schedules.

A fantastic resource for train travel as you are considering is BudgetEuropeTravel.com. Call their 800 number and they will be very helpful and knowledgeable. You can buy your tickets through them, with a small shipping and handling fee included. Their people really know the train routes and schedules, to help make your trip as efficient as possible.

Check this site,
http://plannerint.b-rail.be/bin/quer...n?L=profi&
input Firenze and Salzburg Hbf (careful with spelling - Hbf is short for Hauptbahnhof meaning principal station).
Sounds like you'd rather do the daytrip since you wish to see scenery and such.
There is a great combo of fast trains, leaving confortably at 10:14AM from Firenze SMN (the Santa Maria Novella station), getting you to Salzburg at 18:53 (6:53PM).
You have only two ainless and comfortable switches, in Bologna (arr. 11:12AM, dep. 11:26) and in Innsbruck (arr. 16:33, dep. 17:02).
Another combo leaves F. at 11:40AM and you switch in Venezia Mestre (not the Venice down by the canals but the industrial Mestre up on the mainland), arr. 14:06 dep. 14:56, and you switch again in Villach, arr. 17:40 dep. 18:11, arr. in Salzburg at 20:48 (8:48PM).
The night train that leaves at 9:53PM has sleepers and couchettes (simple bunks), it stops at 5:25AM in Kufstein and you have to get off and wait for the 5:44AM that then gets into Salzburg at 6:57AM.
At least you can stretch out and get a few winks - just how well you'll sleep depends on your tolerance for noises and for the "unfamiliar", and you see no scenery of course, but it saves a night in a hotel.
These times are true for dates before Dec. 12 when all over Europe the timetables are being adjusted, sometimes by only very little, other times (but rarely) drastically. So wait to be sure and check again, also at www.trenitalia.it (the Italian train site where you'll also get pricing).
