How best to enjoy Dubronik for 2 nights?

I have a conference to attend in Zagreb on Oct 12. But I plan to arrive on Oct 9 to use the weekend (Oct 9-11) to see the much talked about historical town of Dubrovnik. By bus, takes 10-11 hours so I guess flying there would be the best option.
I will be travelling solo, female and would like to stay in or close to the old town. I would appreciate hotel recommendations. I called Hotel Grand Villa Argentina and they were fully booked (in October !!??). (Their website was quoting Euros 127 for a single room. Not sure if this is reasonable for October. Moot point since they are fully booked)
I would like to stay in a rather good hotel vs. a pension type. I've come a long way and would like to treat myself ! Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Just got back yesterday from Croatia and stayed at the Villa Argentina for 203 Eurosfor a double. Seems odd they would be booked in October. .. The Excelsior is also a nice hotel and just up the street towards town--check them.

I personally would not stay in a sobe for a 2 night stay. The sobes are pretty hit and miss as far as comfort levels. The ones in town are usually up a very demanding flights of stairs and the ones out of town are often too far out.

The flight from Zagreb to Dubrovnik (or vice versa in your case) couldn't be easier. You can book flights from Atlas travel (http://www.atlas-croatia.com/english.html) and pick up the tickets just before your flight. They don't fly every day so I hope that works for your dates.

Be sure you devote 2-3 hours to "walk the wall" in Dubrovnik.

PS --Zagreb was a surprise. Really loved it. Felt very safe. People super friendly. Good vibe. Good food. Hope you can maybe get up early and at least go down to the main square for a coffee in the morning.

I second the Excelsior. We spent several days there in April. It has a great location, close to the wall and I think safe for a single female walking back and forth to the walled city.

There's enough to do in old town for a weekend. We spent many hours walking the wall, visiting the museums, the shops and trying the restaurants. Ragusta II is especially nice. There are several trip reports on Fodors.

Have a wonderful visit. I'd love to return.

dear Offwego:

I also went to your other threads about Croatia and boy, can you write !!! your enthusiasm and love for life and travel just shows. Your input is very much appreciated and I'm sure other travellers find it valuable. I have printed them out as I want to take them with me as references.

Your input on the sobes was spot on and have decided to take the hotel stay route. I have made reservations at Excelsior via www.kasbah.com - the single room was for Euro 81.00/night (taxes and fees included) vs. the Euro130 being charged by other online booking (i.e., Expedia) or travel agents. So perhaps you can also use the kasbah site as a reference when shopping for hotel rates.

Wishing you safe journeys through the years...

My favorite memory of Dubronik is the drive from the airport to the city around dusk/sunset. The view from the road to the oldtown is just amazing.
