Houseboat Accommodations in Amsterdam
We would like to stay in a houseboat during our 5 days in Amsterdam in early May. We've booked the traditional houseboat at the Acacia, but at 110 E's, we're starting to get worried after reading a few negative reviews (musty smelling, inconsistent hot water in the shower, etc.). We're finding quite a few houseboat accommodations in the 120-130 E's range. We would like a recommendation from anyone who has stayed in a houseboat recently. Thanks a bunch!

Hi, William.
I stayed in the "older" Acacia houseboat in 2003. Unless things have been updated, I wouldn't recommend the older boat (they had 2 -- one older, one newer). I don't know what the newer one was like, it looked good on the outside.
Yes, it was musty. The water was a problem because it left our skin and hair feel like we couldn't get rinsed off thoroughly. Yuck. The atmosphere was very run-down 1950's... everything very outdated. We're not fancy or high end travelers, so we didn'd mind it that much, but it was the smell and water that turned us off.
But, it was a blast sitting on the deck, watching the world go by on water and on the sidewalks. I loved that. And we certainly saved money buying food from the market/grocer to eat on the boat.
And, I loved the location in the Jordaan, which was the best neighborhood to be in, I thought.
So, in a nutshell -- If I could find a newer boat in the Jordaan for a reasonable price, I would do it again in a heartbeat.
Go for it and let us know how you make out. Have fun.

Thanks to all of you for your feedback. We will be staying in the Houseboat Donna Theresia that is available through http://www.frederic.nl/. Frederic's houseboats come highly recommended.

I checked out the Frederic site. They don't list square footage so hard to know what you're actually getting. They add a surcharge of 7.50 euro PER person for linens, Give me a break! What kind of legit rental would do this? Won't book with them on principle. I found a good selection of houseboats at houseboat-rental-Amsterdam.com. They do have a booking fee that's non-refundable but that's why I get travel insurance. See you on the canal!
