House of Terror

We would like to visit the House of Terror museum during our upcoming Budapest trip. Has anyone taken children there? I'm wondering if this will be too intense for our 13-yr old daughter.
Thank you!

I was there last March. Don't know how YOUR daughter would take it but I would guess MOST would be just fine. It's more of a history tour than a house of horror or terror. Very informative look into the Red menace post WW2.
I would certainly recomend it for the whole family.

I agree with the previous poster. We took our 13 year old daughter there. It seemed more historical than terrifying to her. (A lot of it was over her head.) She was affected by it, but not inappropriately so.

I might add, you should rent the carry along recordings as each room or display is explained in Hungarian and you either pick up a sheet of paper while entering each room to read about the displays or listen to the recording.

We visited the museum in May and saw many school children obviously on field trips. As previous posters said, I think a lot of the exhibition was probably over their head but the message of the gruesome domination of the Hungarian Nazis and then the Communists is so important it merits a visit. An audio headset is essential to fully understand the tribute the exhibition pays to the memory of the victims of two murderous regimes. I don't remember for sure, but I don't think the tape can be paused which will make it difficult for you to pass age-appropriate information along to your daughter but there are 4 floors chock full of excellent displays.

Well worth the money.

I was told by a guide at the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Budapest not to visit the House of Terror as it minimizes Nazi terror & maximizes Communist terror. I urge all Budapest visitors to view the line up of shoes along the Danube river bank (Pest side) between the Chain Bridge & the parliament buildings.Read the memorial to those who were bound, shot & thrown into the Danube by the Iron Cross Militia. The ultimate horror!

I visited the House of Terror last October and don't recall anything that was inapropriate for a 13 year old. I don't think the fact that it focuses on the communist time as opposed to the Nazi time is a reason to not visit it.
