Hotels: Metropole or Welcome/Brussels

I THINK I can get the Metropole for a nice price in October and I KNOW that the Welcome is "different" -- I'm sure there is no comparison, but I'm asking for experiences with the Metropole especially.

Metropole is an excellent choice, near all the central attractions of Bruxelles.
Café is a must for a drink.Try to have a room not on the Debroukere place because the traffic is heavy.
To eat nearby you have to go in quartier Sainte Catherine, the old harbor of Bruxelles...and Bin' t Bor is
excellent...(but try to make a reservation because it's always full...).

Thanks so much for the suggestions -- I'm leaning towards the Metropole, but the Welcome looks so interesting and the managers sound great

Sally

Jody and I both use and like the welcome but it's not in the same league as the Metropole.

As Monpetit says, watch for traffic noise. The Art Nouveau is meant to be stunning

In May, we had reservations for the Welcome Hotel ----- when we arrived, they had cancelled those reservations, and four of us were left scurrying for a hotel. I, too, thought it sounded like a great site, but Sophie was not even apologetic about cancelling on us.

Hi SFowler, how "nice" is that rate? The Metropole has a wonderful cafe (we go there about once a week--my husband loves those cocktail Italianos) and the public rooms are stylin', but it attracts a conventioneer crowd and it's on a very busy, not particularly attractive street.
There are some other very good business class hotels...like the Hotel Chatelain (all suites) or the Hyatt Barsey (chic boutique hotel and we've seen rooms go for about $110 a night).

Nope, we didn't stay at the Metropole when we were in Brussels last week - but I wish we had invested the extra 40 Euro...
We walked into the reception area and could well imagine why this had been a real grand hotel once.

The cafe in front is a wonderful place during the day and we didn't think the immediate surroundings were so bad. Actually, you're just around the corner from some of the major attractions.

It really comes down to the question what kind of feel your hotel should have... Small, somewhat cozy and individual in the way that every room has a different country as a theme - but also a bit DIY-style.
Or...
