that is going to be difficult - I went 3 times last year. 10 in the last 4 years.

I do not know where to start. The island has everything for anyone at any level.

The main shopping areas are Palma, Pollensa, Port Andratx, On the development along the coast to Magaluf.

The problem is that most of the development on the beach happened in the 70s when the island was mainly a cheap and cheerful destination.

Its strategic position in the tourism world has now gone through the roof. However, most higher quality new developments for not on the beach.

Because the island services a huge range of market segments - be more specific.

How are you for price, fashion, quality of hotel, children etc

    Hi markrosy...thanks for the reply.

This is what I am looking for, in order of importance:

    1. Location - walking distance to attractions
    2. Clean/Comforable - (I don't do bugs :) It does not necessarily have to be brand new, but not falling apart either
    3. Prefer all inclusive
    4. BEACH - really should be first... I don't want to have to take a cab - but if its a VERY short walk - I would not rule it out.
    5. Price? Not sure what the going rate is. I looked at and was considering booking the Riu Bravo - and that was 1344 Euro for 6 nights, all inclusive.
    6. Kids? Not a problem at all...

Are you familiar with Riu Bravo (or any Riu there), or there is a bunch of Iberostar resorts too. I felt comfortable with the chain resorts because I've stayed with them in Mexico & Dominican Republic.

I am under so much pressure, because I know this is high season, and I want to jump on the airfare, but am nervous to do so without a hotel. I am also staying in Madrid for 2 nights before heading to Palma, but city hotels are a litte easier to book.

Any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

You might look at the Portixol Hotel which is located on the far side of the harbor from the ferry docks and only a short walk to the old town. Also a very very short walk to the beaches, either along the bay or the really big sandy beaches behind the hotel.

It is a lovely hotel with breakfast included. Not sure if they have all-in plans but there is a nice upscale resatuarant as well as light fare at the bar. There are a lot of very inexpensive bars and restaurants nearby.

    Hi Chrissy

I haven't styed at that Rui but have stayed at others - yes their standards are pretty good.

Playes De Palma - is a very developed resort. However, it is very close to the centre of Palma, which is for me one of the most under-rated cities in Europe. Malllorca had had vast amounts of tourism for 60 plus years. As it is a relatively small area the wealth has simply stacked up.

The Mallorquins are very close-knit and it is essentially a country aside from Spain. The shopping in Palma is very good as it has a great mix of locally produced good, small design shops, along with the international chains/brands you would expect.

The beaches at this hotel are very clean and of good quality - it is essentially a Spanish resort and many of the tourists will be either Sapnish or German. The Brits head for the North in Pollensa or Alcudia - my brother stayed at the Ibostar in Alcudia of was impressed.

We always go a little more local in our choice of hotels. Mallorca currently excels in country manor tyoe hotels - many are not near the beach but are the best of their type in the world (on a par with Tuscany).

    For trips - try :

The train to Soller (a 1940s affair with huge romance)

    The views at Cape Formentor

The beach at Colonia San Jordi - frequently rated in the top 10 in the world.

Pollensa - with its great market and architecture.

Deia/Valledemosa - for its international A list - views and Chopins museum.

Lunch on the Paseo Maritimo in Palma (along with all those tanned yachtpeople who have just cruised in)

Cala D'Dor marina for its glitz and restaurants

The cathedral in Palma - along with Seville's it is the best Gothic in the world.

Palma old town - for is character.

Lunch at Il Parliamentario in Palma - the essence of the Ritz in Paris but without the prices.

Our favourite place is a sleepy little port - Porto Petro in the East - lots of charm and bars over looking the harbour that steal 6 hours of your life. There is also public transport to Cala Mondrago - the Natural Park with two stunning beaches.

Finally, never but never visit Mallorca without a trip to Bar Abaco - no point trying to describe just think Carmen meets Pirates of the Carribean meets Gone with the Wind meets Carmen miranda.

If you want a posh hire car cheaply try Autos Roig who usually do a BMW for around £50 per day.

I love this island - enjoy yourself.
