Hotels in Munich and Salzberg

My son and daughter in law are traveling to Munich and Salzburg next Fall (after Octoberfest). They will be in Munich for a week and Salzburg for two days. Can anyone recommend reasonably priced comfortable lodging ( 100 to 150 Euros) near the center of each city. I realize that there is much info available in guidebooks; however I trust personal experiences more. Thank you for your help.

Here are two: Both in the center of their respective old towns, both within budget (at least most of the year, not sure about Munich during Oktoberfest when rates generally double!) and both quite nice:

Hotel Concorde http://www.concorde-muenchen.de/ (Munich)

Das Goldene Ente http://www.ente.at/ (Salzburg)

Last summer we stayed at the Motel One Sendlinger Tor, which is just south of Marienplatz, maybe 10 minute walk and very close to the Sendlinger Tor U-Bahn station and tram stop. Our rate was 84 euro/night.

The location of the hotel is great. The hotel itself was pretty good. It is recently built - very stylishly done and nice to look at. In some aspects they clearly chose form over function, but those were relatively minor things.

For convenience to Oktoberfest, you can't beat Hotel Uhland www.hotel-uhland.de, but their rates probably will be higher at that time. Great hotel.

Hotel Uhland is a very nice place. A mansion converted into a boutique hotel. Great service and breakfast. About one block from the Oktoberfest park, so it fills up way in advance.

Oops, I just noticed you specifically said AFTER Oktoberfest.

We stayed at the Hotel Uhland in June, in their family room for our four. We loved it. Nice breakfast offered. Free bikes to borrow. Great tree-lined neighborhood, with restaurants to walk to.

The train station is about a ten minute walk. Maybe 20 minute walk to Marianplatz.

Am not sure if it's in the budget, but for a true Munich experience, I'd check it out.

There are tons of hotels of all levels right around the train station that is an easy walk to Marienplatz the center of Munich. Any of the Hotel websites will give you lots of choices. We like the Drei Lowen but have stayed in several and they would be in your price range. Closer in to the center of town but a little more expensive are the Platzl and the Blauer Bock. I have not stayed at either of them but I have heard good things about both.

In Salzburg we like to stay in the Altstadt so we are close to the things we like to do and see. The Goldenen Ente was mentioned above so that is one choice. Another we like is the Weisses Kreuz behind the Cathedral. Be sure to have a meal at the Sankt Peters Shriftskeller right behind the St Peter's (Sound of Music) graveyard where they hid from the Nazis in the movie. The restaurant has two levels and two menus. We like the less expensive fare in the cellet as opposed to the big Mozart show and dinner upstairs.

You are going to a couple of our favorite places so we hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

HOTEL BRISTOL in Salzburg is a great location. We stayed there last in 2007. It is across from Mozarts Home and an easy walk across the bridge from the Old Town. Most of the cast of Sound of Music used this hotel when filming the movie in 1964. Good service and nice people.

Munich has a good subway system. If you can find a good hotel in the suburbs near a stop you can easily subway into downtown. We have done this a few times. Just one more option.

In Munich we liked the Hotel Platzl, only a block from the main square.

In Salzburg, the Novotel is a good option. It's just across the bridge from downtown Salzburg.

I stay at the Munich Hilton for work and it is in a great area. You go down to the basement of the hotel and there is a complete shopping area-DM(drugstore) Aldi(grocery) and lots of other shops and strip mall type restaurants.

There is also an S Bahn station there that takes you anywhere in Munich-the main platz is only 2 stops away. The area around the hotel has wonderful restaurants and shops.

If you can grab some type of deal I would definitely stay there. Its about a block and a half to the river with the beer halls and all the history!

Hi tuc,

I can highly recommend http://www.ammoos.at/main.php?language=en&m=home%29

It is a B&B on the outskirts BUT the bus is less than 1 min away and it takes only 12 min to downtown.
