Planning a trip to CPH at the end of August and was looking for a hotel near the Stroget area, not in it but near it. We looked at Hotel 27, it seems nice, location is good however the price seems a bit high(in USD). I read that staying near the train station can be hit-or-miss and sometimes seedy.

Suggestions?

Hello fellow Cajun!

The area immediately behind the train station and down on Istegade is a bit sketchy. Some porn shops. What I think is a homeless shelter. Some Asian restaurants. Quite a few hard-core drunks milling about. I'm not sure I'd be overly concerned with my safety (I go to the Asian markets around there a lot, but only during the day), but I don't think it would be a particularly pleasant experience.

There are some other hotels down Vesterbrogade, which is less seedy. Some good (ethnic) dining options in the area, though, and the meatpacking district has some hipster nightlife options. But, with regards to your preference for being near the Strøget, this puts you a decent walk away.

I would also note that the Strøget has a 'good' end and a 'bad' end. The portion that ends at Radhuspladsen (nearer the train station) is the 'bad' end. A bunch of fast food shops, tourist kitsch, and not much else. Not unsafe, but not very exciting. The nicer shops and more pleasant areas are clustered toward the Kongens Nytorv end, especially the stretch between there and Amagertorv.

With that in mind, I'd consider something around Kongens Nytorv, which would give you access to the more pleasant areas of Strøget, as well as to Nyhavn and the harbor area. Also, you can take the metro from the airport to Kongens Nytorv, which is easier and more frequent than the train. Downside is that it is on the opposite end of the Strøget from Tivoli. At this end, there are a few places that might come in a bit cheaper than Hotel 27:

- The Hotel Neptun is on a nice street a couple of blocks off Nyhavn. http://www.clarionhotel.com/hotel-co...-denmark-DK006
- Either the Hotel Opera or the Hotel Strand are in decent locations, too. http://www.arp-hansen.com/

You will need to read up on the reviews for these places, as I have not stayed at any of them.

If you did stay nearer the train station, a few people have recommended the Square, which is run by the same company as the Opera and Strand. Right on Radhuspladsen. http://www.arp-hansen.com/

The Square is conveniently located right at the start of Stroget, right across from the square. Its a nice hotel too.

I think the concern is with the other side of the train station. There is a pretty big difference. I would also note that all but one of the rooms at Nimb overlook Tivoli Gardens, not the train station.

If you have a US credit card, you could try Priceline. Bid for a 4-star and it looks like the Marriott is pretty much the only hotel that comes up, and can be had for as little as $100 or so on weekends. Not the most central location, but a very, very nice hotel. Count on a 10-minute walk to Radhuspladsen.

We stayed at Clarion Mayfair and loved it. The rate includes breakfast, dinner, 24 hr coffee/tea, afternoon snack, fresh fruit, free internet. Because of the meals we only had to get a sandwich for lunch. BTW our meals there were far superior to what we had had on the cruise ship! We had a "superior" room and had plenty of room for our stuff...not crowded at all.
Walking distance to everything. Also note that there is a lot of construction going on right near the Tivoli. We were a few blocks from that and weren't bothered by it.

What do you mean by this "the price seems a bit high(in USD)"? Scandinavia is one of the most expensive regions in the world for tourists due to the tax rates.

I checked in and then out of the Nimb. They offered me a Junior Suite - very expensive and situated over an exhaust fan and looking onto the Tivoli gardens. While the hotel and room were very nice it was terribly noisy. Note, this hotel does not have air conditioning.

I also checked out the Mayfair. Once again, if you have a room on the street then it is noisy - also no air conditioning. It was a warm summer day in Copenhagen. Mayfair area was definitely seedy.

In the end I stayed at the Marriott. Nice rooms but a hike - 15+ minutes to get to anything interesting. Also, no places to eat in the immediate area.

Follow-up....
We ended up staying at Hotel 27. Great location, Tivoli and the Town Hall is basically between it and the train station, so it's an easy walk (2 blocks). Rooms were basic European standard, bed shoved against the wall due to size and space. Bath was small but everything in it. Rates were on the high side but we were prepared. (Organic) Breakfast was great and always packed! Seems like tour buses like this hotel too.

Late for OP, but we stayed 4 nights at the Marriott in April '11. While it was a bit of a walk to get to things [an easy, safe walk] in the Square area, it was a large room with great views. There was a really nice restaurant a short walk along the river that we had our last dinner at: http://www.copenhagenisland.dk/restaurant/

It was a great meal in a beautiful setting.

Walking in Copenhagen is easy, so the fact that you have to walk a bit from the Marriott to get places wasn't really much of an issue for us. We walked to the Carlsburg Brewery, now that was a hike!!

If you can get the Marriott on Priceline for $100, grab it. What a deal!
