we stayed at a Hilton close to Syntagama square
and the facilities were pretty nice but the food was
terrible and expensive--ugh! nice rooftop bar that
had view of Acropolis--just go see the Grand
Bretagne hotel for fun.

I was just in Athens and found the Grande Bretagne to be surprisningly run down. The rooms had certainly seen better days. The Hilton had large rooms, a fantastic pool, great views..... I didn't eat there, but why would I with the Plaka and Milton's (a wonderful seafood restaurant) so nearby.
Whatever you do, avoid the Hotel King Jason. My boyfriend
and I had the bad luck of spending a night there during a layover
in Athens, and it was one of the worst experiences of
our lives. The hotel was decrepit, our room wasn't very clean,
there were roaches everywhere. Plus, the neighborhood
where the hotel is located is in an area of Athens where
you'll find more junkies than you ever thought could
exist. Avoid it. I've heard that the Sheraton Hotel near the
Plaka is extremely nice. It's too bad our tour company didn't
place us there.
If you don't mind staying outside of Athens away from the pollution and noises of the city check out the Astir Palace at Vouliamegni (Spelling may be a little off) Beach. Its South along the coast past Piraeus I believe. They have wonderful bungalows as well as an excellent Beach Hotel. Its been 12 years but I have very fond memories of this area.
