Hotel suggestion near Termini Station?

We need to come back to Rome from Florence before flying back to the US. This is a lats minute change in plans - we are flying out in a week? Any kind suggestions on a hotel near Termini under 130 Euros? I have read some posts - is the area around Termini considered unsafe? Thanks in advance!

I didn't think the area was terribly unsafe. The piazza in front of the station is where you need to watch your purse - lots of pick pockets, but that's the norm for places crowded with tourists and transients.

I stayed in Hotel Kennedy and thought it was great. It's newly remodeled and the staff is friendly and helpful. It's about a 5 minute walk from Termini. Here's their web site:

I've stayed at the Kennedy 3x and also recommend it.
Actually it's only 1 short block from the middle side entrance of the station. And if you're taking the Airport Train the hotel is actually closer than if you got dropped-off in front of the station.
They have their own website and have always responded quickly.

I've stayed on that side of Termini 7x, the area is very safe. Regards, Walter

The pickpockets operate BOTH inside and outside the station...if you are careful with your belongings I doubt you'll have problems or feel unsafe.

Hotel Canada is a nice one ... and I think it's pretty close to 130 euros.

I won't recommend our hotel, but the area is safe. Don't worry. Just use normal caution that you would in any large city.

We're from the LA area and felt safer than at home!

MizMv, last year when we were in Italy, we too flew out of Rome. I wanted to be close to Termini because I thought we'd take the train to the airport. As it turned out, we took the shuttle--it was about 30 euros for my husband and me, and so convenient! Well worth taking over the train. So although we stayed near the train station, we really didn't need to. I wish we hadn't, to tell you the truth. I wish we had picked a hotel in a nicer neighborhood, because the shuttle will pick you up wherever your hotel is. It's not that the Termini area is unsafe, far from it, but it's not exactly picturesque!

I'd spend my last night in Rome in a pretty neighborhood, stay out late walking around and saying goodbye to Italy, and take either a taxi in the morning to Termini, or take the shuttle directly.

I stayed at Hotel Andreotti in 2001 and it was adorable. Really nice concierge, pretty rooms and tasty breakfast. I'd recommend it.

Thanks everyone!
I tried the many suggestions but no availability. I finally went through Eurocheapo and booked one night in Hotel Canova, which is near the Spanish Steps apparently. Thanks to dln for pointing out that I don't need to stay near Termini. Take care.

I stayed at the Hotel Canova and do not recommend it to anyone. Common areas were dirty, and after having been there for 4 days prior to leaving for Florence, really felt that I should have stayed in the Piazza Navona area - much nicer! I really liked my stay at Ave Roma B&B in the Piazza Navona - only about $140E a night, very comfortable and the location was excellent.

Hotel Oceania is wonderful and in the Via Firenze are (very safe - main police station and government buildings). It was about a 10 minute walk from/to the Termini and is a lovely hotel. I wrote a more detailed review... search "Hotel Oceania" and my thread is "Honeymoon in Italy, Report Report" dated June 30th.
