I'm looking at our first trip to germany. Hotels quote a "single room" and a "double room". Which is appropriate for a married couple? What's the difference (bed size, or number of beds?) Tx

A married couple cannot occupy a single room as that is for -- one single person. That's why they use the word single, for one. So it doesn't matter on the bedsize as you will not be allowed to occupy it with two people.
Single room= 1 twin bed
Double room= 1 double bed or 2 twin beds.

A single room is for one person.
A double room is for 2 people.
A double can be one large or two twin beds.
Double room for single use = a double size bed for one occupant
The way I look at it is like this. If you are newlyweds, then I would go for the single. But, if you are highly experienced with the marital condition then I would try the double. Hope this helps!
The above poster is teasing, so do not attempt to book a single room.
However a single man is allowed to bring a guest back to a single room.

Harzer, he isn't everywhere. I've seen signs in hotels stating that only persons booked in are allowed to use the hotel rooms.
So if you bring a "guest", don't let the staff notice.
