hotel recommendations near Venice Marco Polo airport
I'd appreciate any suggestions. We will be spending one night on our way home from a cruise. Would love something nice with character and charm but don't expect there is much near the airport that would qualify. Easy access to the historic centre would be great as we arrive early in the a.m. and would like to explore for the bit of time we have. Thanks for any help.

Since the shuttle bus from Venicee to Marco Polo only takes 20 minutes, it is worse than senseless to stay in a hotel near the airport.
The shuttle leaves from Piazzale Roma. Water buses circulate all night, but if you want convenience, choose a hotel within walking distance of Piazzale Roma. Go to www.venere.com and select Santa Croce Ovest on the map. It will show you Piazzale Roma and the hotel locations in relation to it. Locanda Salieri is very close, inexpensive and well rated by guests who have stayed there.

Thanks Zerlina for the info. which I will look into. Our problem is that we have a very early morning flight so we thought rather than trying to navigate our way with luggage we'd be better off locating ourselves outside of Venice proper and closer to the airport. There seem to be some decent sounding places in Tessera which might suit that would still allow us to check in after our cruise and then head into Venice for the day. We were there two years ago so we don't necessarily feel compelled to stay there again. Appreciate your comments.

I have a very similar question. We, too, are arriving in Venice from cruise and will spend one night. Our flight out is 7:45am (we have to leave that early to make our connection). The airlines told us that we need to be at the airport about 3 hours early so we will be trying to get transportation in the very early morning hours. Should we plan to spend the night at a hotel near the airport? We are concerned about managing our luggage. How easy it is get transportation to the airport at 4:30 in the morning?
Does it make sense to leave the ship and go to a hotel near the airport and leave luggage and return to Venice for the day? We are 3 couples in our 50's and 60's so the early hours trip to the airport is a concern.
Your advice or experience is welcome.

jel1031,
Will you have more time in Venice than just this one night? That may help you make your decision, but for me I would not stay near the airport. I would take a hotel for the night right at Piazzale Roma, the place in Venice where land taxis and buses to the mainland can be found. This is actually not too far from the cruise port. Then you can dump your luggage and enjoy your evening in Venice. In the morning, just take a land taxi to the airport.
I also question the airline's suggestion to get there 3 hours ahead of time. There have been many reports here about the check-in desks at Venice airport not being open yet at 5:00am. Some reports do talk about it taking a lot of time to check in, though my experience was not any longer than usual. For a 7:45am flight, I would expect arriving at Marco Polo airport by 5:30am would be adequate.

We stay one night on board the cruise ship. We arrive one morning and depart the next. We should have almost a full day in Venice before departing the cruise ship. We are staying overnight after departing cruise because the only connecting flights leave so early and we were concerned about getting off the ship in time to catch the flight. We made our own arrangements.
Our biggest concern is managing luggage once we are off the cruise ship. Would we have to walk or take a taxi to Piazzale Roma? Right now we are thinking we can take a taxi from the port to our hotel, leave our luggage and if we are near the airport take a taxi back or bus back to Venice for more sightseeing. We are just trying to spend our time wisely and not be stressed about our early flight the next day.

The other option is to stay wherever you like in Venice and schedule a water taxi to take you directly to the airport. If your hotel is located on a canal, they will pick you up "curbside", right there at the hotel, and the cost (about 100 euro) when split between three couples, is very economical. We loved going to the airport this way for our very early flight - a wonderful way to say good-bye to Venezia.
