Hotel recommendations in Rome?

1. It is much, much better to be near the sights (i.e., within or close to the triangle of Campo de Fiori/Pantheon/Piazza Navona) than closer to Termini. From the "triangle," you can walk to almost any point of interest, from the Vatican at one end to the Colosseum at the other. The area is also extremely well served by buses that go anywhere you would want to go. It's also full of cafes and restaurants, and it's also safe at night (which some of the area around Termini is not).
2. Yes. That's roughly 165 Euro per night (I imagine, for a double...). If the search box would work (which it has not done for about four months), you could find suggestions by putting <Rome hotels> (without the arrows) in the search box. The rates do, however, depend more than a little on the season, and nowadays the high season in Rome seems to be from March 1 to November 1, plus the time around Christmas, and with the exception of the month of August when rates are often lower.

Fantastic. I'm so glad that I found this chat site. For me, it's always better to have an actual person's perspective/recommendation instead of just going on a review in a book. I appreciate your time!

I'll second that.
First trip to Rome many years ago we stayed near the train station. Everything was a journey. Thought we didn't like Rome.
Two years ago we stayed at Santa Cjiara directly behind the Pantheon. What a difference. Great location.

I have touted my favorite (around 190-200$) hotel in Rome..on Via Purificacion, between the Spanish Steps and Piazza Barberini..Hotel Modigliani...wonderful boutique establishment..ask for a garden view room..lovely..owned by a child psychologist and a local writer..excellent breakfast spread..easy walking to most sites...best to take the subway to the Coliseum and the Forum..but you can walk to Piazza Navona, Campo di Fiori, the Pantheon etc etc...

Avoid the Termini. It is not a good area in which to wander in the evenings as you try to decide where to eat and have a gelato! We just stayed at Hotel Teatro di Pompeo, which is very reasonably priced, 30 seconds from Campo di Fiori and about a 5 minute walk from Piazza Navona. You can walk to all the sites from the hotel very easily, with the possible exception of the Vatican - we took the bus over there. In August it cost E150 a night and that included a very nice breakfast. The staff are excellent. The room had AC, fridge and hairdryer and was, we thought, excellent value for money. We will certainly stay there again.

If you were arriving late one night by train and departing the next day, and if the luggage is heavy, then Termini would be a better location, to me.
But if you intend to spend some days sightseeing, and like walking back to your hotel through pleasant and charming neighborhoods, then choose another area.
