With a hotel budget of about $1000, where could a family of 5 stay in central Paris for 4 nights Dec 31-Jan4, preferably with a complimentary breakfast included? Most apartments require 7 day stay. We have been searching the web for a kitchenette being one of the two rooms we will need. Trying to save on some restaurant meals - 3 teens equate to lots of food. If impossible to find, we'd at least be thankful for the free breakfast. Thanks.

Look at renting an apt. for 7 days and using for 4. Still might be cheaper than some hotels.
Also, Etap and Hotelformule1 on Rue Dr. Babinski- Etap is about 60E per room, sleeps 3. Bath/toilet is Insuite. Hotelformule1 is around 50Euro or less, sleeps 3 per room and bath/toilet are down the hall. All you can eat breakfast is around 7 to 8 Euro each in either place. If you choose one of these, there is a great brasserie not far. Set menu per person is around 9-14, depending on choices. If you decide to go there, email me: jkbritt@hotmail.com and I will give directions.
NOOO on Hotel Formule1, I would not wish that on anyone. I'd go back to the well on the apartments, some people will rent for less than a week especially, or the paying for a week, but leaving early.

**these are central and close to transport and things for your teens to do, though some will argue that it is not the "center" of Paris - you are 10 min metro to Notre Dame, 15 min to the Louvre, they are not "out there."
Are you aware that your dates are about the most expensive hotel rate dates of the entire year? SO you want a hotel room for a family of five with kitchenette during peak season for $250 a night (which is only 168 euro). I think this is going to be extremeley difficult for a couple reasons. First, the rate is very low that you want to pay for all that; second, not many hotels have kitchenettes; third, hardly any hotels have rooms for five. Combine the three, and it seems impossible to me, but you never know.
For example, I've stayed at the Trois Poussins, which is not fancy and in a cheaper, nontouristic area (9th up near Pigalle), and they want 250-275 euro for such a room during those dates. They do have studios with kitchenettes, which is why I thought of them. Citadines will be about that rate, also.
Here's a no or 1* hotel that is about 155 euro for a room for five in the Latin Qtr: http://www.hotel-marignan.com
That's about the best you will probably do with a hotel, as that place is kind of like a hostel and does have a kitchen for guest use (but your room will not). Please note that their "low season" for winter does not include 12/26 to 1/5, which is high rates. They have a free breakfast, but it isn't much at all.
$1000 is 673 euro for a week's apt and you might find that, actually, if you accept something basic.
you want: cheap - breakfast - a quad - kitchenette - over NEW YEARS?!
That would be really difficult in most any major US city, doubly difficult in Paris.
An apartment is your only realistic option.
Oh, excuse me. Even worse - not a quad, but a 'pent' sleeping five.
cherrybomb, when you want cheap, that is what you get. at 156 Euro per night for 5 people, Etap and HF1 become viable options, over New Years. I still think the apt. idea is a good one, but they will have to do a lot of research really fast. This should have been booked in August, or earlier.
Cmac3 needs to Google apt. in Paris and start searching now. Most hotels will require 2 rooms and that will probably price them out of range. Etap would come in at 120 Euro (aaprox)for 2 rooms but no cooking facilities. The extra 30Euro could be spent on extra food. Bread, fruit, drinks and cheese can be bought and eaten in the room for a late night snack for children or for breakfast if they do not wish to pay 7 or 8 Euro per person for breakfast. At 35Euro per breakfast, I could supply enough breakfast food cheaper from a grocery store that is around the corner from Etap. There is also a bread store on the corner. For Etap and HF1, a note. Take a long handled screwdriver-flat bladed. The windows will not open from the inside. The handles have been taken off, BUT you can use a flat blade to open them. Take it in checked luggage. We did so and stored drinks and cheese in bags on the window sill to keep them cold. Also, when the room got to hot, opened window to cool it off.
Another possibility is a hostel, where the family gets one room with, for example, six beds. You might have to pay for the 6th. If the hostel has a kitchen (not so common in Paris, I don't think), that might fit your requirements for under your budget.
Look here for options.

Also try
www.hotelscombined.com and consider getting 2 or 3 rooms.
the Formules are for taking a break when miscalculating the time it takes to get from point A to B and you have been driving forever and it is 2am (or for those who need a room for an hour), and even then just driving all night and forgoing sleep is more pleasant - I've done it.
2 of my apt suggestions above are booked, the 2nd one listed is avail, there are also quite a few avail in Montmartre on VRBO that are larger, will rent for 4 days, and fall within the OPs budget. Cmac - take a look at vrbo.com and select Arr. 18 and sort by sleeps high-low and you will find several places that will suit your budget and needs. It is not hopeless to find something, but do it now.
cmac - technically in Paris a law compels hotels to charge separately for breakfast so that guests who do not take breakfast are not charged for it, so add that cost to room rates. While there are a couple places that offer free breakfast most do not. Charge for breakfast can range from a few (say, 5-10) euro on up, and that is per person and usually only a continental breakfast which may not be sufficient for teens with large appetites.
As noted, you will be in Paris at the highest season for hotels. Apartment rates are usually higher then, too, but overall probably offer a better option. If you are willing to make do with one bathroom and maybe have one or two on a sleeper sofa you should be able to find something. Price is generally lower the further out from the center, but with a location near a metro you are able to easily access the main tourist sites.
Have a look at www.homeaway.com - properties 611873a, 246694 look like they may be in your range
Try Rentals in Paris (http://www.rentals-paris.com). they have a number of great apartments, and maybe they might have something available for your budget. Ask to speak to Glenn, who is the owner of the company..
Brian.
Even when the minimum number of days stated is seven for an apartment I suggest you ask if it's possible to rent for a shorter length of time. If available at this point in time an owner or agency may be willing to deal rather than have an apartment sit empty.
Here are two hotel web sites for a family of 5, both with Paris locations, some with kitchenettes and most with breakfast:
