when I stay in Amboise it´s with friends but otherwise I wouldn´t even consider staying in Amboise. The restaurants are, on the whole, awful and cater exclusively to tourists and the town itself is bulging in summer months with bus loads of tourists.
I recommend this hotel/restaurant near Amboise. Ask for a room on the backside of the hotel, away from the roadway:

Look, the entire AREA around Amboise is crawling with visitors "in season" and there's a reason a lot of people are there.
IMO the restaurants are not "awful" but that's subjective. The places I have stayed in the past, one of which had a very well-known and regarded restaurant BTW, are way beyond your price range. You might want to take a look at the Trip Advisor recs while you're waiting for more comments here.

What is the particular draw to Amboise? Even in April, the restaurant problem remains. Why not one of the hotels at Chenonceaux, Loches, Vouvray or Blois?
Here are several more suggestions near Amboise:

Stayed here in the cottage at the front of property. Check to see if prices are in your range for April.Hotel main building was full when we were there in August but we loved the little cottage, private and unique.

Here is my recent stay in Amboise, including all the "awful" restaurants in this massively "touristy" town. Oh, by the way, we loved our stay in Amboise, and it is a perfect (and central) spot to visit the chateaus. The price of the place we stayed was 90 euros a night. It was great and our host was wonderful.
