We are spending a week in the Rome area this May.
We know very little about the area but have an apartment booked for 4 nights in the city centre. We would then like to hire a car and spend three nights in the countryside and maybe try a day trip to Amalfi and the Papal gardens.
Could anyone suggest an area or hotel to base ourselves?
We have been to Tuscany many times and love the countryside there. Ideally we would like a small hotel, 4 star(ish) with pool up to e200 a night for a double room.
Hotel outside Rome?

Anyone?
While it is not right outside Rome I would head to the lovely but simple Locznda Rosati just outside Orvieto and use that as a base for those days. The food at Locanda R is very good, much grown on the property and served family style with the charming owner often hosting.
Thanks lowcomtry but Orvieto is quite a way north.
We were probably looking for somewhere south of Rome.
