Hotel near Rome airport?

Can anyone recommend a hotel within an hour or so of Leonardo da Vinci Airport (FCO) in Rome? My husband and I will be driving from the Siena area, so we'd prefer something north or west of Rome. Obviously there are many choices at the airport, but we'd like to stay in or near somewhere at least a little scenic. We are already staying in the Orvieto area at the beginning of our trip.

Caveats: we absolutely need a hotel with a parking lot for our rental car. Also, we're not interested in staying in Rome itself. Finally, we'd prefer to keep the cost under $200 for the night.

Many thanks to anyone who can help!

Hello, jentrav, I haven't but I have known travelers who have stayed at hotels at Ostia Antica which I understand is not far from the Rome airport. If you go to Trip Advisors you should find some good reviews. And if memory serves me right the last couple returned their rental car at the airport and took a taxi to their Ostia Antica hotel and of course used the taxi again the next morning to get back to the airport. Anyway, just one suggestion you might want to check out. Have a lovely trip!

Yes you can turn your car in ahead of time and stay in Ostia Antica. Two places I will warn you about: Luana Inn which was so run down and un-staffed, without a phone to contact anyone, with packaged dry stuff and a push-button espresso machine for the breakfast, that we bailed out before we unpacked.

The other is the Marriott, which has expensive rooms and very expensive food, and which converted our bill from Euros to dollars at their inflated rates. We did not notice this because we were leaving at 4 am and were rushed. It is called "dynamic currency conversion" and is a way to extract more coney from you. If you should encounter a place that insists on doing it, sign your credit card receipt with the notation, "signed under protest".

Hi J,

http://www.holidayinn.com/hotels/us/...uestid=3380016 is an International Style hotel about 10 min from FCO.

Very good breakfast.

They also have shuttle service to the airport.

Be sure to verify the shuttle schedule of any airport hotel. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Parco dei Medici and learned when we checked in that the first shuttle of the morning departed too late to get us to FCO for our early morning flight.

Thanks to all who offered advice. I may have been unclear in that we do not want to stay at an airport hotel. Our preference is to stay somewhere with some character, and drive about an hour or so to the airport. Our flight out is at 1:45 pm., so we should have some time to do so.

How about the seaside town of Santa Marinella. It's about 50km north of the airport by highway, so an easy drive. There's a gas station on the highway right before the airport where you can fill up.

From Siena you'd cut over to the coast near Grosseto then head south past the port of Rome at Civitavecchia.

I don't have a specific hotel to recommend, but I recall seeing an occasional recommendation here on Fodors, and you can search on www.venere.com (or maybe it's www.venere.it) for hotels & reviews.

J62, Thanks so much for your recommendation. We found a hotel in Santa Marinella (Hotel L'Isola) that is just what we were looking for. I found very good recommendations for it on TripAdvisor. Again, many thanks, and I will try to remember to post a note after we return in October.
