Hotel Lux? in Paris

Hello Paris travelers!

I'm looking to book a hotel in Paris that is good value AND good service at the end of May.

Can anyone tell me if the Lux-Hotel, near to the Gare de Lyon, is a good place in a good neighborhood? (They quoted me 52 Euros/per night)

Thank you,

Francine

there is the lux hotel picpus on blvd. picpus that is near the gare de lyon that i can recommend highly. as a matter of fact, i stay there every trip to paris.

the value and service are excellent. it has both a convenient metro stop (virtually across the street) and an easily walkable RER stop at place de la nation for convenient access to CDG.

the neighborhood is upscale residential with lots of wonderful shops and authentic cafes and restaurants. however, as it is residential, be aware that there is little night life. most of the local cafes close by 2300.

they have their own website.

Subcon, regarding the hotel Lux on Bd.Picpus, I am booking 2 rooms for family for mid June. Since you seem to know the place well, any tips on specific rooms to ask for? Preference is for quiet room, and then secondly a nice room or with nice view.

Never been to that neighborhood before. Any tips on restaurants nearby?

Also, is it true there's a direct bus or RER or something from Nation to CDG airport? My previous time in Paris we had a crazily driven airport shuttle van from our hotel thru parts of the city, not that I'm complaining but it was certainly memorable, hehe, even for an experienced city driver.

Message: I stayed at the Hôtel Lux on Avenue de Corbera about six years ago. I thought it was an excellent value, the rooms were clean and we had two small single beds with a full bath. We used the Reuilly Diderot metro stop that was only about two blocks away. This metro stop was on line #1 and took you to the heart of the city. I would stay there again and the main reason is because of the price. It is hard to beat that price in Paris. If you do a search I think you will find a web page. Do a search on this fourm and I think you will find more information and the web site for this hotel. I did not have a problem with the neighborhood and for the price I don't think you will find much better service.

jimmsla...

sorry not to have gotten back to you but left for amsterdam on the 8th.

the hotel is a five minute walk from the RER at place de la nation. metro picpus (ligne 6) is almost directly across the boulevard.

we normally stay in room 428 which is in a corner and overlooks the blvd and small park. should be very pretty in june. the neighborhood is very quiet.

52 to 65 euros (incl. a very good breakfast) seems about right. one note: the staff's english is rudimentary at best. it'll do for basic services, but don't expect directions or recommendations.

as to cafes and restaurants, there are several close by. but, again, be aware that this is a residential area. so if your french is limited, i would suggest the nearby bastille, marais or republique areas for dining (at least). plus those areas are likely to be more late night.

that said, i really like the hotel and the authenticity of the neighborhood with all its little food stores and small shops.

good luck. have a great trip.

There is an Air France airport shuttle bus which leaves from Gare de Lyon. That would be easy to get to on the RER from Nation, and might be preferable to the RER route as it would avoid the change at Chatelet and would probably drop you off at a better spot at CDG (they stop in front of the terminal departure halls, I believe, so you'd avoid another shuttle at the airport).

jimmsla, check out this URL. It seems that bus #351 goes to CDG from Nation.

Hi

Unfortunately, I have been advised by the Lux Hotel Picpus they are booked out when I wish to travel between the 6th and 11th June. Can anyone recommend another similar hotel which is clean, and moderately priced?

Regards

Trish

Trish,
Look up crepes a_go_go's recommendation of Hotel du Mont Blanc, in the 5th. It's in 28 Rue De La Huchette, tel. 01.43.54.49.44. There are very good comments about this hotel on www.paris.org.

In September I will be staying at Residence les Gobelins in the 13th, not too far from the southern end of the rue Moufftard market, in a nice non-touristy area. The place has gotten great reviews everywhere, they have been very nice to deal with, and I'll be paying 53 E for a single, without breakfast.
http://www.hotelgobelins.com/

More budget hotels to check, all of which have gotten a few or many good reviews on paris.org, tripadvisor.com, jack-travel.com and various tourist guides. They offer single rooms for less than 60 E:

hotel agate, Nation, 12th, http://www.123france.com/123/en/hotel.php?id_hot=493

Hotel Royal Bel Air, 12th, Nation, http://hotel-paris-royalbelair.com/

Hotel de la Porte Doree, 12th, http://www.paris-hotels-paris.com/English/TheHotel1.htm

Hôtel de la Loire, 14th, 39Bis r Moulin Vert, 01 45 40 66 88.

Hotel de Blois, 14th, http://hoteldeblois.com/

You'll notice all of these (except the Mont Blanc) are a bit out of the way, I really like staying in areas that are more residential and less touristy, that's why I've looked them up.

Good luck!
