Hotel La Residenza in Venice - Good or Bad?
I have searched the fodors site for chat talks on Hotel La Residenza in Venice. Can anyone tell me about their stay in this hotel? Fodors marks it as a recommended site and one fodorite said it had cockroaches.. please help! Keep reservation or look elsewhere?

La Residenza
Campo Bandiera e Moro, 3608

Book elsewhere!!!

On a friend's recommendation we booked 5 nights there in 1999 and unfortunately paid our travel agent in advance. It was hideous. The beds were so lumpy and uncomfortable. I did not want to even touch the bed coverings, they were old and thin and smelled stale. The entire room reeked of bleach that they used in the adjoining bathroom. And the decor was dusty attic style. We had boxes of who knows what in our room covered with a frayed cloth.

I could not get our money back after arguing in 3 languages with the front desk clerk. After one night, we went over to the Hotel Georgione and it was the best $800 we ever wasted ($200/night extra for the remaining 4 nights of our vacation).

The Georgione did not have the promised "old Venice charm" of La Res. but its friendly staff, comfortable pretty rooms and great breakfasts more than pleased us.
Brittany, my experience at La Rezidenza last year was the opposite of yours. Our room on the third floor was immaculate and nicely decorated, the beds (and bedspreads) clean and comfortable (I have a bad back, so I'm sensitive to soft or lumpy beds), the owners friendly and the ambience rich in the old-world charm we were expecting from a half-century-old palazzo. Wonderfully lavish breakfast room/lobby. We spent three nights there, and would happily have spent more -- it was one of our favorite hotels in Italy.

Lisa,
Can't answer your question about La Residenza, but after viewing Brittany's response I might re-consider. We stayed in Hotel American in 1999 and found it charming--if you don't mind closet-sized bathroom. Staff spoke good English, and was in Dorsoduro off small canal.

I think Fodor's should investigate this "Lisa " person. does he/she have a vendetta about La Residenza in Venice?
I answered her question some time ago... 10 days??? said I'd had a pleasant experience there. Others responded similarly. her excuse then was she only had 7 days to maintain a reservation. Now many days later "she " is still trolling for negative experiences. !!!???!!

there may be something smelly going on here, and it may not be the hotel.
When Lisa previously asked this same question, I informed her that just prior to her inquiry a very negative comment on La Residenza had just appeared on another message board, posted by a "guest user". In hindsight, maybe this is all too much coincidence.
Conspiracy theory, anyone?
