Hotel in Victoria Station, London

Sounds like the Grosvenor House hotel to me -- a gentle, somewhat dilapidated Victorian era hotel genteely slipping into advanced dowagership. You can walk out of the hotel right into Victoria station. I stayed thee with my mother last time we were in England and it was acceptable because it was central, and generally well cared for. The hotel is undergoing modernization (bringing it up to sort of minimum North American standards, though nothing will ever make those pokey English hotel rooms BIG.) A real plus for this hotel in my books is it has ice machines, bless them. If you have been to England before and have suffered warm drinks because you have to beg for ice cubes and they think one tiny cube is enough and two will send England reeling into national debt, then you can appreciate how nice it is to find a hotel with free, all you can use ice available on a 24 hour basis from machines in the halls!

I stayed @ the Grosvenor several years ago. The room was newly decorated, the bathroom was superb, all marble, built in hairdryer, pants press machine. It was neat and just as you would image an older English hotel might be. I woulg highly recommend it, if the price is right.

The Grosvenor House is on Park Lane - and not near Victoria Station. The hotel has been completely refurbished to luxury standards - and if you use a search engine - can find the site on the web. There are few reputable hotels close to Victoria Station.

While I slightly mis-spoke myself by referring to the Grosvenor hotel on Buckingham Road, London SW1 where I stayed on two occasions in 1995 as the Grosvenor House, I can confirm that the hotel attached to Victoria station IS the Grosvenor. I just had my mum pull the receipts for the hotel (which makes reference to it being 237 rooms in addition to suites, meeting rooms etc.) as we stayed there together and she keeps copies of absolutely everything. Moreover, I would dispute the fact there are few reputable hotels near Victoria station -- there are several very nice hotels in the area, some good restaurants and pubs, sites to visit on foot they are so close, inluding Parliament and Westminster Abbey, and of course not to forget Buckingham Palace is a hop, skip and jump away -- a few blocks to be precise.
